On June 28, 2007, members of the Ardoch Lake and Shabot Obaadjiwan First
Nations along with non-native allies occupied a proposed uranium mine site
on traditional Algonquin lands, to prevent drilling for core samples by
Frontenac Ventures, Inc. Since then, they have maintained a 24/7 presence at
the Ardoch, Ontario mine site. The site sits on unceded indigenous territory
and on the Mississippi River, which is connected to the Ottawa River
watershed. They have also temporarily blockaded Highway 7 in Ardoch, held
info-pickets in Perth, and have been very vocal in calling for a moratorium
on all uranium mining in Ontario. Both nations still maintain a close
identification with the land they live on, and rely heavily on traditional
activities such as hunting and trapping to meet their needs. As a result,
they refuse to allow their land to be poisoned and desecrated in the toxic
process of uranium extraction, even sample extraction. Currently, several
individuals involved in the blockade are being sued by Frontenac Ventures
for $75 million. Despite this, the blockade continues, and serves as a
reminder of the ongoing resistance to the genocidal and ecocidal practices
of colonizing corporations and governments in Canada and abroad.
