happy autumn, freeskool fans!

i'm happy to invite you all to the first class for Documentary Discussion/
TED: The Class, this Monday, October 4th, 7 o'clock at the Sky Dragon
Centre, 27 King William, Hamilton!
this broad fall class is intended to be an enjoyable, engaging, and perhaps
above all diverse weekly meeting to provide an opportunity for us all to
learn something new and reflect on it in a group. i know some who've
expressed interest in the class have ideas for material and i know i sure do
- the hope is that we will all form this class together, bringing our own
interests and backgrounds into the mix. (if you're curious for a sneak peak,
some of my personal not-so-secret desires for material include TED talks on
creativity, biology, astronomy and epistemology, Chomsky's Manufacturing
Consent, a documentary on Woodstock, and a top-secret vinyl recording of an
interview with pianist Glenn Gould, and i couldn't be more eager to include
your ideas and fascinations in our "coursework")

everything is fair game - history, theory, science, crafts or trades,
cultural analysis, radical ideas, ancient art, contemporary debate... and I
am at least as excited for the discourse as I am for the viewing.
one of my favourite things about Freeskool has always been its tenet of
radical inclusivity - the idea of creating open, inviting and
anti-oppressive spaces not for a certain kind of person of a certain
qualification, but for everyone who wants to learn. that diversity is
terrifically inspiring. i don't want to sit by myself or with a handful of
people with whom I have largely shared experiences and watch a TED talk that
I know will delight me and move on - i want to play with and even exhaust
the topic, have my assumptions challenged, have my attention redirected,
have the information presented fleshed out by others with unique
perspectives. so, Freeskool seems rather like a dream come true.
this class, it seems, can offer us new perspectives, introduce us to new
notions or activities to love or explore or at least be intrigued by, and
give us an opportunity to meet and interact with new people in a positive
and totally unstressful environment.

If this sounds like something you might want to drop in on [regular
attendance in the class is encouraged for the sake of fortifying the class
but is not at all required] or if you feel like you need a little more of
the good, glorious kind of learning in your life, please let me know at
rache.nolan at gmail.com [that's like "rachel", but without the L...] so that I
can have an idea of numbers. our first class will include a conversation
about how we'd like to proceed [ie. how to schedule/organise material,
facilitation, etc.], a first screening/discussion with a selection of good
stuff for us to choose from, and probably baked goods.

See you on Monday!

Be brave with learning,

Rachel & Freeskool
