Hello everyone,
First of all, I would like to once again thank Council, and especially the
Hiring Committee, for recognizing the skills and experience I bring to the
job of Chief Returning Officer. Aside from my GSA experience, it's
important to mention in particular the many many federal and provincial
elections in which I have worked.
What you are seeing is much of the expertise I have acquired from those
elections, and many of the best practices I have learned from their
standard procedures, applied to this year's GSA election.
I understand that many people may not be used to these procedures, but it
is the only way I can assure you that this year's election is free and fair.
My poll clerks have been working very hard under a very demanding CRO, and
I am not willing to put them in a position that would increase the
likelihood of them making mistakes.
We could have 2 people voting at once at a polling station. In fact, we
could have 10 people voting at once at a polling station. But this would
simply multiply by 2, or by 10, the risk of my poll clerks making mistakes.
It would also increase the likelihood of cheating, increase the likelihood
of the election results being contested, and increase the likelihood of the
whole thing being overturned. And I'm not willing to do that. Would you if
you were in my position?
Please feel free to email me with any other comments or suggestions you may
have.
*Jon Summers*
