Hi again, everyone,
At our last meeting, I put forward a motion that emerged from our
discussions at the Council retreat. We voted to table it until our next
meeting.
On Wednesday, please vote for one of the following 2 options.
I have put a lot of time and effort into coming up with the best way to
improve the structure of Council for 2015 and beyond. The 2 options below,
as I have said, present three big advantages: (1) making Council more
efficient by reducing the number of seats, but not too much; (2) ensuring
that larger faculties still have more seats on Council; (3) preventing
smaller faculties from being dominated by the larger ones.
Here, once again, are my 2 options:
*OPTION 1: 15 DIRECTORS (5 ENCS, 4 A&S, 3 JMSB, 2 FA, 1 IND)*
*1-500 students, 1 Director;*
*501-1100 students, 2 Directors;*
*1101-1800 students, 3 Directors;*
*1801-2600 students, 4 Directors;*
*2601-3500 students, 5 Directors;*
*3501-4500 students, 6 Directors;*
*(increasing increments of 500, 600, 700...)*
*OPTION 2: 12 DIRECTORS (4 ENCS, 3 A&S, 2 JMSB, 2 FA, 1 IND)*
*1-500 students, 1 Director;*
*501-1200 students, 2 Directors;*
*1201-2100 students, 3 Directors; *
*2101-4200 students, 4 Directors*
*(increasing increments of 500, 700, 900...)*
Some have argued the Council should be made even SMALLER, for the sake of
efficiency. But I disagree. Making Council smaller than 12 would impede its
ability to, among other things, oversee the work of the 5 executives and
the staff. There would also not be enough people to fill various
committees--a problem the GSA already faces.
Others have argued the Council should be made LARGER, so that there will be
more participation. But this thinking is flawed as well. Larger bodies have
even more difficulty attaining quorum. Just think about a General Assembly!
When you have a group of 15 people, 60% may show up, but when you have a
group of 6000, it's a challenge just to reach 10%.
Thank you for voting for one of these 2 options on Wednesday!
Jon
