Hi everyone!
Another month, another Council meeting!
First of all, please allow me to apologize for the ridiculous number of
items on the agenda with my name next to them this month. I'll try to cool
it for next time!
Hopefully, Thursday's meeting will go more quickly if we take time to
discuss and reflect on some of the agenda items beforehand. In particular,
there are two motions I have proposed based on our Council Retreat and my
discussions with Marilou.
These two motions address the GSA's democratic processes, and complement
each other in important ways. The first is about being smaller and more
efficient; the second is about reaching out and being more inclusive.
The first motion in particular is worth looking at. It is currently on the
agenda as point 6.2 with the title "Bylaw change: Composition of the
Council of Directors."
It would go into effect for next year's elections and do 3 important
things: (1) make it easier for Council to get work done by reducing the
number of seats; (2) keep proportional representation by faculty,
continuing to give the largest faculties the most seats on Council; (3)
ensure that the smaller faculties still have a strong voice on Council.
I don't want to take up any more of your time, but I would be happy to
speak with you some more about this motion, whether by email or at
Thursday's meeting.
Thank you!
Jon
