August 01, 2003 - San Diego, California Earth Liberation Front Action In the largest act of environmental sabotage in US history, the Earth Liberation Front (ELF) has accepted responsibility for a $50 million fire in San Diego, California, that destroyed an unfinished five-story condominium complex on August 1. The complex is owned by Garden Communities, the second largest developer in Southern California. Nationwide, Garden Communities owns more than 40,000 apartments and 25 million square feet of commercial space. The Garden Communities project was approved in 2000, despite opposition from nearby residents. Many who hike Rose Canyon's four-mile length are tired of the sprawl engulfing the canyon and have expressed support for the ELF's efforts to draw attention to the development of San Diego's last remaining wetlands and wild places. Journal - article by Rod Coronado) August 22, 2003 - Arcadia, Duarte, West Covina California Earth Liberation Front Action Four actions in Southern California took place on the night of August 22 - targeting Hummers and other SUVs. The actions include: * Arcadia, California - Rusnak Mercedes Benz. Ten S.U.V.s were spraypainted with "terrorist," "killer," and "ELF". * Duarte, California - Duarte Mitsubishi. The dealership building and approximately twenty vehicles were painted with "ELF" and the phrases "gross polluter" and "We (heart) pollution". * West Covina, California. An early morning fire ripped through a GM autodealership, destroying and damaging several SUVS including several Hummer H2s. A warehouse on the site was also destroyed by fire. Messages left at the scene there included "I (heart) Pollution," "American Wastefullness" and "ELF". Although the ELF Press Office has received no communications about these actions from the persons responsible, spraypainted signatures at all scenes indicate claims of responsibility by ELF activists. Damage estimates for these actions are approximately $2.5 million. (Information provided by the ELF Press Office) August 24th, 2003 - Sultan, Washington Animal Liberation Front Action 10,000 mink were liberated from a fur farm on the night of August 24th. Initial damage estimates for this action are in the $500,000 range. The following communique was received from the ALF: "The Animal Liberation Front is claiming responsibility for the liberation of 10,000 mink from a Sultan fur farm (339th Ave SE - dirt road east of landing strip). Fencing was removed and nearly every cage opened. It has been shown through such efforts as the Mink Rehabilitation Project that farm raised mink can survive and flourish in the wild. All industry responses stating the contrary are lies. All institutions of animal exploitation - regardless of any attempts to conceal their bloody operations - will be located and the animals liberated. -A.L.F. We would also like to express our utter contempt for those who cooperate with the authorities in their hunt for animal liberators - especially snitch Justin Samuel of San Diego currently attempting to reassimilate into the animal liberation movement. (Information provided by the ALF Press Office) August 28th, 2003 - Emeryville, California Animal Liberation Brigade Action Two pipe bombs exploded at the offices of Chiron Corporation, one of the largest international biotech firms located in the United States. The following communique was received by aboveground activists: "In the early hours of August 28th volunteers from the Revolutionary Cells descended on the animal killing scum Chiron. We left them with a small surprise of 2 pipe bombs filled with an ammonium nitrate slurry with redundant timers. This action came about because Chiron has continued their murderous connection with Huntingdon Life Sciences even though they have been exposed numerous times as some of the most egregious animal killers in the industry. Chiron, you were asked to sever your ties with HLS, you were told, and yet you continued your relations with them. Now it is time for you face the consequences of your actions. If you choose to continue you relations with HLS you will no longer be subject only to the actions of the above ground animal rights movement, you will face us. This is the endgame for the animal killers and if you choose to stand with them you will be dealt with accordingly. There will be no quarter given, no more half measures taken. Josh is being accused by the FBI of involvement with the ELF-claimed fire and vandalism of SUV dealerships in West Covina, California on August 22nd, which resulted in over a million dollars in damages. Not only was Josh arrested in the middle of the night, but the co-operative house in which he lived with 14 other activists was then ripped apart by FBI agents who seized the computers, political documents and personal effects of many people living in the house. Information about the co-op, and photos and stories from the raid are available online at http://regen.org There has been no concrete evidence put forward by the FBI to suggest that Josh Connole was in any way involved with the West Covina Hummer dealership action. They apparently based the raid on a likeness comparison from blurry security-video footage and nothing else. While there no physical evidence to suggest that Josh was at the site, there *is* plenty of evidence that Josh was assisting a friend moving into their house on the night the Hummer action took place, and wasn't anywhere near West Covina. The arrest is part of a pattern of harassment the FBI has been visiting on activists in Southern California since mid-August in a desperate attempt to claim "success" in their hunt for ELF members. Since 1997, very few ELF activists have been arrested which has led to a growing frustration in the FBI as evidenced by the recent raids against activists in the San Diego area and now this arrest on what appears to be non-existent grounds. Bail has been set at an outrageous sum of $825,000 - so even though Josh is innocent - he will likely have to spend time in prison awaiting trial. Legal and court costs are mounting already as members of the Regen Co-operative are trying to scrape together what they can for a defense fund and replace their seized belongings which included computers, cameras and other expensive items. Although the ELF Press Office has received no communications about this action from the persons responsible, a banner found at the site of the fires reading "Development destruction. Stop raping nature. The ELFs are angry," indicates a claim of responsibility by ELF activists. The fires broke out at approximately 4 a.m. in the upscale Carmel Valley neighbourhood of San Diego, California. The fires took out four houses under construction in two parts of the neighbourhood and caused an estimated $1 million in damages. This is the fifth action in 2003 against urban sprawl known to have been the work of the Earth Liberation Front. Other occurences of ELF actions in response to the encroachment of luxury housing on wild space since January 1st include fires in San Diego, California (August); Chico, California (June); Macomb County, Michigan (June), and Superior Township, Michigan (April). Waters North America (formerly known as the Perrier Group of America) in Mecosta County, Michigan. According to news reports, these incendiaries failed to ignite and were removed from the station without incident. Controversy has surrounded the Ice Mountain Plant for the past several years with local activist groups asserting the bottling plant will have a negative impact on the local environment, and that it violates stated and federal water rights. Three Native American tribes have launched a lawsuit against Nestl? on the basis that rivers and ultimately the Great Lakes will be affected by its operations. Although the incendiaries failed to ignite, the ELF has sent a message that the commodification of water is an attack on a fundamental right of all beings and must be stopped. The communique follows: When all legal avenues of dissent have been undertaken to no avail, only one option remains. Illegal Direct Action. The people of Michigan have stated very clearly that we do not want a Perrier Bottling Plant. We've had enough of empty political rhetoric about freedom and justice, enough of sitting back while our most basic rights are handed over to corporations. Clean water is one of the most fundamental necessities, and no one can be allowed to privatize it, commodify it, and try and sell it back to us. We will no longer stand idly be while corporations profit at the expense of all others. To this end, we have taken action against one of the pumping stations that Perrier uses to steal water. On the night of Sunday, the 21st of September, the ELF penetrated the perimeter fence of an area of land used for canned hunts. This particular location, a short distance from Rodney, MI, near 13 Mile Rd and M20 is home to the pumping stations that supply the Perrier Bottling Plant in Mecosta County. Access to one of the pumping stations was gained and timed incendiary devices were placed. We will not allow the commodification of life to continue.
