This is 48 hours from the time that the ultimatum was communicated to the public through the corporate media. In response to this, the Armed Forces Recruiting Center on Old Post Road in Edison, NJ was the target of direct action. The intent was to cause as much economic damage as possible. Specifically it was intended to increase the costs to pursue the invasion and to eliminate another piece of the American military-industrial complex. The front door was shattered and the inside was methodically destroyed. Front displays were damaged, propaganda was scattered, and marine recruitment pictures were smashed. We consider this to be an appropriate response from the American public to stop the inevitable invasion. Time is running short, and everything possible must be done to stop our government's race to war. Approximately 230,000 US and British troops are now surrounding Iraq and are prepared to unleash a full-scale assault and invasion of Iraqi soil. It is certain that many young American and British troops will die in the fighting. There is also a great chance of American civilian casualties. An invasion of Iraq will help escalate conditions that will lead to more violent attacks similar to those of September 11th. By bombing Iraq, there will also be a great number of Iraqi casualties. Already, UNICEF has estimated that 1.7 million Iraqis have died as direct result of imposed sanctions. Inhumane and manipulative steps have already been taken against the Iraqi people by Washington in the months during the build up. US Special Operations and CIA forces have been working inside Iraq to foment unrest and help lay the groundwork for an invasion. A constant bombardment of propaganda from the US military has also been underway. 240,000 leaflets have been dropped around Iraq, threatening Iraqis that if US and British troops were fired upon that it would lead to more severe bombing. Also, bombing has been continuous throughout the past 13 years. It has devastated Iraq's infrastructure, leading to widespread malnutrition and disease. Every humanitarian and research organization from Oxfam to Middle East Research Project predict a catastrophic humanitarian disaster for Iraqi citizens when there is an invasion. Who is paying for this invasion? The amount of resources necessary to conduct an invasion of this sort have been subsidized from the American public, and the corporate media has made every effort to be sure that the debate is kept closed. As the military build-up around Iraq has been underway, the unemployment rate in the US reached the highest it has been in 9 years. The US still scores last amongst all industrialized nations in health care, according to the World Health Organization. This year, every city government in America, for the first time in history, reported an increase in hunger at the US Conference of Mayors. All the while, the Bush administration continues to push for the ending of taxes on stock dividends which is estimated to give investors $364 billion dollars over 10 years. The public is paying for the invasion, while elites cash in on it. Make no mistake about the endless deceptive language from Washington. They are not talking about starting a war, despite all the rhetorical rantings. A war has been raging between the US and Iraq for the past 14 years. Since the Iraqi military's retreat from Kuwait, there has been a continuous bombardment on water sanitation systems and factories by US forces. Operation Desert Fox went completely unnoticed as the US corporate media offered the public sensational stories about the OJ Simpson trial. Washington is not starting a war. Washington is starting an invasion. They are trying to mobilize the American public to support the escalation of aggressive military policies. There was never any regard from Washington for international democracy. In November, MSNBC, subsidiary of General Electric (the second largest contractor to the Pentagon), announced that invasion plans had been approved by the Pentagon. At the beginning of December, senior officials in the White House said that ?war is inevitable.? On the UN Security Council, the US delegates have always supported the most ruthless and draconian measures against civilian populations. It spearheaded a resolution in December that banned the importation of pharmaceutical drugs into Iraq. When issues of Washington's own accountability are in question, it abstains or uses its veto power as was done with the Kyoto Agreement and with the reparations debate in South Africa. Washington has been intent on invading Iraq for many months now, and it is illustrated by its actions. The evidence is overwhelming: the US government, with little regard for international political democracy, is prepared to potentially murder millions of Iraqis to extend its hegemony over the oil-rich Middle East region. As Americans, they expect us to simply watch TV and ?endure? any desperate attacks against US interests. They expect us to be bystanders and pawns of a government that is prepared to throw the world into a massive war. We are calling upon all Americans to act upon their responsibilities and hold this government accountable for its crimes against humanity. We call upon all humane, reasonable and sane voices for democracy to take any means necessary to prevent this humanitarian disaster from happening. If profit is their motive, then make it unprofitable. If passive consumption is what they want, then actively dissent. If they want you to participate in the slaughter, then refuse. Affirm yourselves as citizens who believe in genuine democracy by destroying their totalitarian institutions and creating participatory ones in their place. Our imperial government may try as much as it wants, but history shows that humanity will always endure and continue the struggle for a better world. Onward to social revolution! Message-ID: <20030321075857.98288.qmail@web41102.mail.yahoo.com> Frontline Information Service - Update 03/20/2003 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The North American ALF Press Office received the following Communique March 18th, 2003 in regard to the actions taken against McDonalds in Chico, CA. -begin Communique- On March 3rd, 2003 at approximately 3:00am, two incendiary devices were placed at a McDonalds restaurant in Chico California. We wanted to communicate this letter to mass media as well as underground sources for a couple of reasons. First, we want to make it clear that this is not an attempt to attract media. We just feel that the explanation should come from us so the media knows exactly what our intentions are. We don't want to be misquoted like so many other cells have been in the past. McDonalds has been targeted because of their prevalent connection to the factory farming industry. McDonalds is the world's largest user of beef. Not to mention that in order to rear the amount of cattle, ex-rainforest land is used for pasture that prevents the regeneration of forests and kills many more unique species. Meat production is also extremely wasteful in end product terms-145 million tons of grain is fed to livestock, which produces 21 tons of meat. The animals used to manufacture McDonalds meat products are intensively farmed. This means that they can spend their entire lives without seeing natural daylight, bred in overcrowded conditions and their movement is restricted. These are just a few of many reasons why McDonalds must be shut down. We seek complete liberation of all animals from the hands of human exploitation. When is the meat eating public going to realize that selling measly veggie burgers is not enough? The speciesist attitude of the meat eating society also needs to stop. We have no compromise and we will not stop till all the animals are free to live a happy life and all the abusers discontinue their senseless murder!!! The estimated damage of the action is unknown currently. Animal liberation actions comprised just under 50%, or 48 actions, while 53 actions were committed for a combination of Earth liberation, anti-GMO, anti-SUV, anti-development and other reasons. (One action was claimed for both animal and anti-GMO reasons, thus the incongruity of the totals.) (Earth liberation actions include those taken against forest destruction, new developments, SUVs, gmo crops and research, police and military, globalization, and other reasons.) The Animal Liberation Front took action on 18 occasions, approx. half as many which occurred in 2001. The Earth Liberation Front took action on 13 occasions, well less than half as many as the previous year. The ALF and ELF claimed joint responsibility on 4 occasions, up 1 from 2001. Below are brief summaries of Animal Liberation and Earth Liberation actions, followed by a breakdown of the numbers. Following that are the detailed listings of all actions taken in 2002. * * * * * ANIMAL LIBERATION ACTIONS 2002 The total illegal direct actions taken for animal liberation that occurred in 2002 were 48, down from 72 in 2001, a 33.3% decrease. March was the busiest month with 9 actions while February and December each had only 1. There were 44 actions in the US, in 13 states, 2 in Canada, in 2 provinces, and 2 in cyberspace. New York and California were the most active states, with 11 and 10 actions respectively, followed by Pennsylvania. Acts of property destruction occurred in 35 of the 48 actions (73%) including three fires set, down from 4 set in 2001. There were 8 animal release actions and 2 animal rescues, one less than the previous year's total of 11 animal release/rescue actions. The Animal Liberation Front claimed credit for 21 of the 48 actions, or 44%, including 3 actions jointly claimed with the Earth Liberation Front. 15 actions (31%) were claimed by anonymous and unaligned activists, a drastic increase from 2002, while 7 actions went unclaimed. The campaign against Huntingdon Life Sciences dominated the issues with 17 actions taken against HLS and their affiliated corporations. Marsh received the most attention with 9 actions, likely directly leading to Marsh's decision to divest itself of HLS on Dec. 18, 2002. The fur industry was targeted in 13 actions, while dairy and meat issues received 6 actions each. Hunting/trapping/fishing, pets, and circuses were issues also focussed on. 7 actions were taken against fast food outlets, and over 1500 animals were given a chance at freedom. Williams filed a 'Notice of Abandonment' in BC Supreme Court on March 17, 2003. All property seized in the July 30th raid will be returned to Barbarash this week. "The RCMP have completely given up and admitted total defeat in this case," a jubiliant Barbarash said last week. "Another chapter of police and government harassment against me has concluded." This marks the conclusion of the latest chapter of police and political harrasment Barbarash has been subjected to from the RCMP, CSIS, and various other law enforcement agencies since 1994. It is unclear how many thousands of taxpayer dollars were wasted in this latest police campaign. The RCMP, acting on a search warrant issued by Justice Dohm in July 2002, raided and seized property belonging to Barbarash in the case of a Maine law enforcement investigation into minor criminal acts commited by the Animal Liberation Front in 1999. Barbarash spoke to Maine media in support of the ALF actions. That search warrant was issued by request of the U.S. Dept. of Justice to the Canadian Justice Dept. several times in 2000 and 2001, and finally signed by Justice Dohm in 2002, amidst the post-Sept. 11th hysteria. Total damages from the Maine incidents amounted to no more than $8700. The warrant was quashed by Madame Justice Elizabeth Bennett on Dec. 15, 2002. Bennett stated that the information the search warrant was based upon, a single photocopied newspaper article from Oct. 1999, was "unreliable" and that the Information To Obtain the Search Warrant was based upon "triple hearsay." Barbarash was neither charged nor under investigation for any of the alleged offences. The RCMP's new anti-terrorist unit INSET (Integrated National Security Enforcement Team), headed by Cpl. Derrick Ross, were utilized publicly for only the second time in this raid against Barbarash, enforcing a request made under the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty betwen the two countries. Established in June 2002, INSET "will help ensure early detection and prevention of any potential threats to national security," according to an RCMP press release. The mandate of INSET is "to work with their partners nationally and internationally towards the common goal of detection and disruption of potential terrorist threats." (RCMP press release, June 18th, 2002) Barbarash is still wondering how speaking with the media, the reason he was targeted, was a "potential terrorist threat." Property seized from the raid included two computers, dozens of computer disks, many videos on environmental, alternative media, and alternative news issues, and misc. files. It was destined for law enforcement authorities in Maine as well as the FBI. All of it will be returned this week to Barbarash. "The dropping of all proceedings and an agreement to return all the property seized was the only resolution I ever saw happening," comments David Barbarash. "This whole ordeal, everything from the door they smashed when they raided my home, to the wholesale seizure of my property, to the reliability of the entire campaign on a photocopied newspaper article from Maine three years ago, was just outrageous. This was pure harrasment and it reeks of rot and decay. Law enforcement the world over suffer from an inherent ethical bankruptcy and the RCMP are no exception." B.C. Civil Liberties Association spokesperson Murray Mollard has commented on the raid: "It raises the question what is terrorism? This would not be the kind of action we consider terrorism. (The raid) appears to be using a criminal matter to permit the United States to come into Canada. Its an expansion of authority on what is essentially a criminal issue."
