This is where we get people's Account Numbers and give them to VanCity or CCEC. Then that bank deducts the amount that they specified from their account each month. Spartaus is currently looking into this, and this is currently how Co-Op Radio is able to function. I'm not sure if this will help, but the basic Uniserve.com adsl contract allows you to run servers legally at no extra charge. You might look into that to increase your capabilities without incurring the additional cost. hth, b. Similarly Smarttnet's (and probably other ADSL re-sellers) basic ADSL account provides a static IP and the ability to run servers. - Ben From bill3 at uniserve.com Tue Oct 9 12:54:14 2007 From: bill3 at uniserve.com (Bill) Date: Tue, 09 Oct 2007 12:54:14 -0700 Subject: [FreeGeek] Call for agenda items & volunteers for October monthly meeting In-Reply-To: <470BC2A8.9010000@computerdolt.com> References: <470557B5.4050503@freegeekvancouver.org> <1191777185.4190.67.camel@localhost.localdomain> <470BC2A8.9010000@computerdolt.com> Message-ID: <1191959654.4190.204.camel@localhost.localdomain> On Tue, 2007-09-10 at 11:04 -0700, Ben Holt wrote: > Similarly Smarttnet's (and probably other ADSL re-sellers) basic ADSL > account provides a static IP and the ability to run servers. > Sure Ben is right. But I remember when I left Telus I made a pretty good survey of the local ISPs and found that there was quite a bit of variation among vendors. Three parameters of interest to me were a static ip, the cost per extra gig of traffic and the total monthly bandwidth. For example while Uniserve charges 4 bucks a month extra for a static, they give you 30 gig a month and charge $1 per gig extra. Smarttnet give you a free static but only 6 gigs a month and charge $20 per gig extra. So which one is better depends on your situation. Shop carefully. b. In all, I think I've burned through eight computers over the last three years -- one got crushed when my prized moose head fell off the wall, and I spilled various liquids on the other seven. Typically when I bust up one of my PCs, I just toss it on the burn pile with everything else, but then I got to thinking, "I bet I could tear this sucker apart and use the various pieces in all sorts of different ways." For instance, discarded keyboards make great dog toys, and you can use those little gray mouse balls to build a sweet miniature billiard set. Now, I bet you're thinking to yourself, "surely you can't do much else with a broken computer!" Au contraire, mon amie. Check out these other ingenious uses for discarded computer pieces... Ubuntu is a freely available, simple to use Linux desktop and server. The Ubuntu project has developed a strong reputation for technical excellence and a commitment to the free software community, and we are always keen to grow and extend our community where possible. Ubuntu does not distinguish between different Enterprise and Open versions - we have one single version of Ubuntu, and this version is and will always be entirely free. Ubuntu is used by over 8 million people and has a worldwide community of volunteers who contribute in many different areas such as packaging, documentation, art, translations, testing, marketing and more. In just two years, Ubuntu has become the most popular Linux distribution in the world with millions of users and a spot regularly at the top of Distrowatch. Ever wondered what all the fuss is about? How we've achieved such a great feat in such a short space of time? Here's where you can find out. Ubuntu Open Week is a series of online workshops where you can: * learn about the Ubuntu landscape * talk to some of the key developers from the Ubuntu project * find out about the Community and its relationship with Canonical * participate in an open Q&A with Mark Shuttleworth, the founder of Ubuntu * much more...
