You're receiving this message because you're now subscribed! Could you briefly introduce yourself and let us know your experience, your interest in this project, and how much time you see being able commit over the next year? I'm Scott Nelson and have 15 years entrepreneurial experience, 10 years of involvement with non-profits, and 25 years experience as a computer geek, the last five with Linux. I currently sit on the board of the Vancouver Community Net and am an Indymedia Debian sysadmin and bike activist. I'm interested in all aspects of getting this off the ground and can see donating a day a week over the next year. If pressed, I usually describe myself as web server database programmer. I'm also a member of the Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition, and in my "spare" time I help out at Momentum magazine, which is where I first read about FreeGeek Portland. I have zero experience with Linux and I am completely inept when it comes to computer networks. Respectfully, I think the name "FreeGeek Vancity" should be changed to something else, because it will create confusion with VanCity (the bank), and VanCity (the bank) might very well be a source of startup capital. I suggest "FreeGeek Vancouver" instead. There's lots of warehouse space available in the area between Broadway and 2nd Ave, between Main and Cambie Streets. Some of it has been vacant for years. And I can probably give a day a week, too. We'll have to work out which day that might be. I have been an avid user of computers for 17 years, the last two of which I have I learned and used Linux(Debian) exclusively. Professionally I have been in the auto industry for a little over 10 years, half of which was in the recycling end. Oddly enough, I do not own a car, and ride a bike that at present needs some serious love. I have quit my full time job to work on FreeGeek Vancouver full time. Whatever it takes, I am willing to put the time into making FG-Vancouver a reality. I look forward to working with everyone on this forum(and outside of it), and I thank everyone in advance for their time and involvement. -- David From sean at seanhill.ca Thu Oct 26 23:56:27 2006 From: sean at seanhill.ca (sean hill) Date: Thu, 26 Oct 2006 23:56:27 -0700 Subject: [FreeGeek] Welcome - intros In-Reply-To: <200610261820.08544.humble@resist.ca> References: <8c0eafaa0610261615m7ac1865ai54f9d63f3279ac1@mail.gmail.com> <200610261820.08544.humble@resist.ca> Message-ID: <4541AD9B.9000405@seanhill.ca> Long live FreeGV! Thanks for getting the wheels in motion Scott! My name is Sean Hill and I've been rediscovering my interest in computers over the last 4 years. While my computer experience goes back to the days of the Amiga, I eventually found myself having to acclimatize to the brave new world of Windows. In the process of setting up to do video editing, I found and fell in love with Free Software and how it handed me back control of my own computer. My exploration inevitably led to a few semi-successful forays with Linux and last Spring I managed to get my laptop life converted over to Ubuntu Linux. After a few months of trial I switched over my desktop and also setup a small server. I have a wide but still fairly shallow range of experience with many free and open source tools and languages. I'm currently studying computer science courses part-time out of general interest, with an eye towards putting my tech knowledge towards community social and economic development. This semester I'm taking courses on data structures and Unix scripting (an exceptional kickstart to the world of Linux!). Outside of the box, my mode of transportation is the bicycle for fun, fitness, and practicality. I dabble in digital video and I have maintained a serious meditation practice for the past four years. I believe the time has come for a homegrown DIY computer organization (or two!). This summer I spent some time volunteering at Vancouver Community Net, and took a trip down to FreeGeek in Portland with my friends Dustin and Jim. The trip ultimately led to the Momentum article written by Dustin. FreeGeek is an amazing and inspiring venture and I'm looking forward to seeing its incarnation here. I see in FreeGeek a vehicle for hardware reuse and recycling; FLOSS advocacy, education, and development; and basic community building/empowerment. Between work and school my availability is a bit spotty until the end of the year, and until then I'd only be able to offer part of a day every 2 weeks, looking to becoming more involved at a later date. sean :o) agent humble wrote: > Hi folks, > > Welcome to the FreeGeek Vancouver discussion list. Instead, residents of the region will be required to separate their old electronics for recycling. The regional district now buries 20,000 tonnes a year of dead and obsolete computers, monitors, printers and TV sets in landfill sites. Under a proposal to be voted on by district directors Friday, garbage disposal of waste electronics will be banned next August, coinciding with the launch of a provincewide electronics industry recycling program. The industry program is being implemented province-by-province across Canada. The regional district's role will be to keep electronics out of the garbage and encourage residents to recycle them, Albert van Roodselaar, a GVRD planner, said Tuesday. "We're dealing with where we don't want it to go. They're the parties that are dealing with where it should go," van Roodselaar said. The provincewide program was mandated by the provincial government but is being implemented by the B.C. branch of an industry group, Electronic Products Stewardship Canada, whose members include the major electronics manufacturers and retailers, from Apple and Microsoft to London Drugs and Best Buy. Several companies already accept electronics for recycling, "but they are not necessarily disposing of it in a manner that is consistent with what the province and the federal government require," van Roodselaar said. One company, Port Coquitlam-based TechnoTrash, expects to be one of several recyclers chosen to work with the program, said owner-manager Kelly Belanger. TechnoTrash recycles upwards of 100 tonnes of electronics a month, Belanger said. As part of the industry plan, consumers will pay a surcharge when they buy new computers, monitors, printers and TV sets. The money will be used to subsidize the recycling program. The fees have not been set yet but in a similar program in Alberta, they range from $5 to $45 per component, depending on its type and size. The industry recycling group is expected to set up a series of drop-off depots by next summer. Its program will be run by Encorp Pacific (Canada), which already operates a container recycling program for the beverage industry. The GVRD is hoping consumers will cooperate by not trashing their old computers and TV sets until the depots are in place, said Paul Remillard, a GVRD division manager. "Certainly from January on, if they would please keep it and store it on a temporary basis, that would be helpful," Remillard said. GVRD officials will get to work on the details of the ban if the GVRD board gives the go-ahead on Friday. A tentative four-step implementation plan includes: - Planning to begin next month. - A public education program to start in January. - A "soft" ban on electronics entering the regional waste stream to begin in August 2007. Violators will be warned but not penalized. - A full ban starting in January 2008. Most likely, people dumping trash at regional facilities with more than a specified proportion of electronics will face surcharges. A similar system for recyclable paper products imposes surcharges of 50 per cent. Enforcement will be done at GVRD waste transfer and disposal facilities that receive large loads of garbage. It is not clear yet whether there will be any attempt to police what goes into garbage residents put out for pickup. The provincial environment ministry said the industry recycling program may be ready to roll next June, two months ahead of schedule. bboei at png.canwest.com - - - WHAT WILL BE ACCEPTED FOR RECYCLING The electronics industry's recycling program is expected to include: - Desktop and laptop computers, including monitor, keyboard, mouse and cables, but not handheld devices. - Desktop printers that print on paper up to 8.5 inches wide. - Televisions. Not included are computers and televisions "that are part of or attached to vehicles, marine vessels or commercial or industrial equipment." Recycling will include disassembling equipment and processing it to recover raw materials such as metals, glass and plastics. Recyclers will be required to remove components that contain mercury such as lamps and switches; batteries; toner and ink cartridges; and any other material designated as posing environmental, safety or mechanical risks. I'll be there. Items on the top of my mind include getting to know y'all better, getting a temporary space (since I started telling people about FreeGeek they've started to dump more old computers on me!), figuring out a board of directors, incorporating as a non-profit, setting up a bank account, website. Wheee... If you haven't been to the Brickhouse before the location is quite convenient - located right near the Adanac bike route (on Main). They are doing the speakeasy thing a lot of days so you actually have to enter by going to the back door (in the alley) and knocking to be let in. Bring your bike through the pub to the far end. There is a decent wifi signal from Radha right above.
