Congratulations! We all welcome you to become a new Free Geek! Your organization now has Preliminary Status as an official Free Geek. You have permission to use the name Free Geek as part of your organization's name. More importantly, you are now eligible for membership in Free Geek Intergalactic, and can participate in the process of helping others start down the path of becoming a Free Geek or an affiliated organization in their own community. Soon, we'll need everyone to sign a Trademark License Agreement. It's still in development, though, and since you're all now Free Geeks, we'd love any input you have: http://wiki.freegeek.org/index.php/Trademark_License_Agreement. More on what might be involved in being part of Free Geek Intergalactic later. We can now help you start to work (if you haven't already) on things like incorporation, setting up your decision-making bodies, getting your bylaws together, learning how to run your organization in a democratic and inclusive way without bogging down in too much process, researching the recycling industry in your area, building up your infrastructure and recruiting volunteers to help out. All of these things need to be accomplished or set up so that your group can successfully complete the second step of the application process. The newly complete list of Free Geeks is: * Free Geek (Portland, aka the Mothership) http://freegeek.org * Free Geek Arkansas (in Fayetteville) http://freegeekarkansas.org * Free Geek Chicago (Illinois) http://freegeekchicago.org * Free Geek Columbus (Ohio) http://freegeekcolumbus.org * Free Geek Michiana (South Bend, Indiana) http://freegeekmichiana.org * Free Geek Vancouver (Vancouver, BC) http://freegeekvancouver.org Accepted but not using the Free Geek name yet: * Rutherford County Computer Recyclers (Murfreesboro, Tennessee) -- David Repa 604-690-7372 From richard at freegeek.org Sat Dec 2 11:31:33 2006 From: richard at freegeek.org (That Man Behind the Curtain) Date: Sat, 02 Dec 2006 11:31:33 -0800 Subject: [FreeGeek] [Fwd: [freegeek-volunteer] Don't know what to do!!] Message-ID: <4571D495.50301@freegeek.org> forwarding to Free Geek Vancouver -------- Original Message -------- Subject: [freegeek-volunteer] Don't know what to do!! I did however hear that you guy's may be coming to Vancouver soon. Is this true, and when are you coming? Also, do you guys get any computers that are pentium 4's as well? I would love to get one of those, or a computer that has better gamingcapibilities than a normal computer. I am more of a gamer than anything else, though i would also need to use it for the web, and for word-processing. Thanks, gimme an e-mail when you can! These lists use mailman, the same as the resist.ca list. The lists use our freegeekvancouver.org domain name so they can be switched to a different host with little fuss. The new lists are currently hosted on my server. I suppose it is as good a place as any for now. I'm not going to sign anyone up automatically for any new lists. The list of groups were taken from the minutes of the last meeting. Here is a list of lists: Fg-communications - Communications To Join: fg-communications-subscribe at freegeekvancouver.org Fg-content - Web and other public content To join: fg-content-subscribe at freegeekvancouver.org Fg-education - Education group To join: fg-education-subscribe at freegeekvancouver.org Fg-governance - Governance mailing list To join: fg-governance-subscribe at freegeekvancouver.org Fg-locations - Looking for a location To join: fg-locations-subscribe at freegeekvancouver.org Fg-ohs - Freegeek Vancouver Health and Safety To join: fg-ohs-subscribe at freegeekvancouver.org Fg-recycling - Recycling group To join: fg-recycling-subscribe at freegeekvancouver.org Fg-software - Freegeek Vancouver software development. To join: fg-software-subscribe at freegeekvancouver.org Additionally, I've created a general discussion list. The freegeek-van at lists.resist.ca list already fills this role. Nine lists isn't much more work than eight, if they are all on the same machine. I leave the issue for discussion, the content of the resist.ca list should be fairly easy to migrate should we choose to do so. Fg-general - General Freegeek Vancouver discussion. To join: fg-general-subscribe at freegeekvancouver.org If you send an email to the -subscribe address, you get a confirmation email with instructions for posting and finding the archives. All posts to all lists are archived on a public website. Email addresses are slightly obfuscated to prevent spam harvesting. -- sim From davidgrant at gmail.com Sun Dec 3 23:55:16 2006 From: davidgrant at gmail.com (David Grant) Date: Sun, 3 Dec 2006 23:55:16 -0800 Subject: [FreeGeek] New lists In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Why so many lists? Scott ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Freedonia was founded in 1997 by Gary Moffatt as an expression of his lifetime commitment to anarchism and to building social and economic alternatives to capitalism. In keeping with this anti-authoritarian vision, Freedonia is a catalyst for the development of movements promoting radical democratic and systemic change. In our 2007 Granting Period, Freedonia is accepting applications from groups who are creating economic alternatives to capitalism. This may include: - organizing around economic issues; - organizing around alternative economic models; - participatory research and development of practical economic alternatives; and - building capacity and tools within groups working to address economic alternatives. Freedonia generally makes grants up to $5,000, but in exceptional cases will consider funding projects up to $10,000. Requests for grants of up to $500 can be made at any time. Freedonia funding is limited to projects located within Ontario and British Colombia, Canada. Freedonia recognizes and values the diversity of our communities and our movements. Freedonia is committed to ending all forms of discrimination and to the realization of full social and economic equality. In this spirit, Freedonia takes proactive measures regarding funding applicants from equity seeking groups. Favourable consideration will be given to projects that expressly and actively promote social and economic equality. Applications for the 2007 Granting Period must be submitted by Fri 16 February 2007 If you have an innovative project that is focused on building economic alternatives, please visit http://www.freedonia.ca to find out whether your group is eligible for a Freedonia grant. Should think about how to go about setting up the systems in the future? policies - What distro are we using? Probably doesn't need a workgroup. No immediate issues with status quo. Simi may be building a new machine that may be able to handle some Free Geek stuff. We will have a system. Try not to keep it on one box. Consolidation will be necessary. Resolution: Design with the idea of where we are going to be [Scott: wants to get a colo somewhere] Dave: We want to align ourselves with older technologies as much as possible. Dave to look into what Portland bandwidth uses. Portland to maintain the Wiki in the short term. Dave to confirm with Portland maybe get Scott working with the Portland Wiki Admin. It puts us in a community context. We should keep them but bury them somewhere Drupal. Maybe put the login controls at bottom of home page. rearanged some of the content on the Drupal page. We want Drupal to not cut off the content the way it is as it is too blog-like and is cutting off information. Update 'sticky' content to indicate the current state of where we are. Get rid of News Aggregator Link from main Drupal page Wiki terminology distinction between Portland and Vancovuer. there are concerns about the terminology and regulation issues between Canada / US. The Wiki terminology is confusing. Ifny changed name of Wiki link to just Wiki as opposed to Mothership Wiki. It is my pleasure to write this letter to you, wishing you all the best for the holiday season, and for the upcoming New Year 2007. Our organization will be working very hard during the holidays to ensure that wishes of those who want a computer or laptop for the holidays are filled. We have many requests from poor people in Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and Canada wide for computers to be donated to them. Many local and far away charities, libraries, community organizations, schools and similar organizations are also hoping they would be able to receive computers for the new year, to replace the old ones they currently have, or they first ever computers in some cases. Hopefully you or your company can help us during this holiday season to fill these wishes and dreams, and ensure that everyone has a good time during these holidays. If there is any old computes that you can no longer use, we would like the opportunity to pick them up and try to use them in our donation programs. Once again, I wish the best during the holiday season to you, your family and colleagues. May all your wishes also come true, and please have a happy and safe holiday season. I look forward to talking to you in the near future, and once again, all the best. Date: Friday 08 December 2006 12:56 am From: James Sayre To: "board-list at vcn.bc.ca" The AGM, Take 2, was a resounding success, at least in my view. There was a "real" quorum of 20+ members, and more serious questions and discussion than I can remember at any of last few I've attended. Part of that was due to the absence of any speakers' program, but in some ways it ended up as a blessing. The members who came got a chance to talk, not just listen, and the meeting went on until nearly 11:00. Craig took the minutes, and will provide the official account of the meeting. Some of highlights included: - Numerous questions about CAP and other public access issues. Based at least on those who attended tonight, there's still a real appetite for telnet access to email accounts (PINE), and a real need for public computers by those who don't have their own. The freegeek project may provide a better answer to that need than anything VCN itself can offer, at least from 411 Dunsmuir, but the need still seems to be there. I promised that the Board would continue to look into ways to "encourage" CAP recipients to keep their computers publicly accessible after the contractual obligation is over, something we've discussed in the past. - Lot of interest in mesh networking. One member who works with a community centre said that they were trying to get BC Housing to fund some kind of affordable access for a public housing project located nearby. I asked it that might be an appropriate site for another mesh pilot project, and encouraged her to let us know more details. I didn't get her name, though - does anyone know how to reach her? - We elected the "slate" by acclamation, plus two new members: - Romina Wendell, a web designer (and more) recommended by Scott. See her web site at: www.romina.nexialist.org Welcome, Romina! - Michael Gurstein, an internationally known academic and longtime board member who told me last week that he is moving back to Vancouver and would like to participate again. Welcome back, Michael! After the break, which didn't occur until after 9:00, we discussed the issues listed on the agenda: - Ifny (sp?) and David from the FreeGeek project gave an excellent report on the project's goals. Members asked lots of questions, and seemed highly interested. There's a "film night" (featuring a film about the Portland project) at Spartacus Books on December 12, at 7:00. I'd definitely be there, but I'm tied up in court next week, and won't be able to make it. We were all very impressed by the presentation, and the principles of the project. See their web site at www.freegeekvancouver.org for more information and for ways to participate. - I tried to omit the linux discussion, but several members really wanted to hear about it, so Ifny and David carried on and answered a lot of technical questions as well as general ones. There seems to be an appetite for people to find out how to try out linux, but they need introductory courses and other user help. That's another item to talk about at future Board meetings. I attended one a couple of years ago (that's where I first met up with BC Wireless) and I remember there being lots of Government-funding-types wandering around. When I was there Microsoft gave the keynote dinner presentation while all of us "penguins" heckled them from a large table in the back. ;-) thoughts? Scott ---------- Forwarded Message ---------- Subject: [VCNboard-list] 2007 Summit on IT - Vancouver, Feb. 23 (22) - 25, 2007 I sent something around a month or so ago about the annual IT Summit, which we as Board members could attend in past years at member's rates - $25 each - which was covered by VCN. The structure seems different this year - government registrations cost a bundle, and all others are $75 before Jan. 15th. Considering that it's a 3-4 day conference at a hotel, and even includes some meals, it's still an incredible deal for those who can take the time. Here are some ideas for discussion. * Update on location search * What does our early financial picture look like... fundraising... capital? * What sort of donations have already been received? What has been given out? * What publicity have we managed to get and what are we seeking? Events we could attend? This is just a start. Unfortunately, I'll be working on the meeting day and won't be able to attend. sean h :o) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL:
