Bus Riders Take a Stand to Stop the Fare Increase!

Following a hugely successful civil disobedience this morning at the
Granville St Bridge, the Bus Riders Union is ready to ramp-up activities for
our June 27th Day of Action to Stop the Fare Increase!

15 Bus Riders Union organizers and active members held a strong blockade of
the Granville Street Bridge at 8:00am this morning. Members held brightly
colored banners blocking Northbound traffic to draw attention to TransLink's
regressive plan to raise bus fares for the 4th time in only 8 years.
Motorists were prevented from going over the bridge for about 10 minutes,
only a fraction of the time that bus riders across the region have to wait
when overcrowded buses pass them by.  Over 19,000 pass-ups occurred in the
transit system last year, largely because TransLink has failed to meet their
own promises in buying expansion buses.  Bus riders have already paid for
three fare increases since the year 2000 and are struggling to live, work
and feed their kids in the most expensive region in Canada.
It's time for TransLink to pay up!  We want more buses and lower fares now!!

affordable, accessible and reliable public transit system.  We have only 1
more week until TransLink votes on the Fare Increase - Call or e-mail the
BRU now to get involved and take a stand!

*TransLink directors will be voting on the 2008 Transportation Plan which
will include a fare increase.  Join BRU members and organizers in voicing
your opposition to the 4th fare increase in 8 years !
Call or e-mail the BRU by Friday June 22nd  to register to speak out at the
TransLink meeting.
