Neoliberal Globalization
and the Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP)
Friday August 17, 7 – 9 PM
@ the Organizing Centre for Social and Economic Justice
672 E. Broadway (at Fraser)
On August 20th Prime Minister Harper of Canada, President Bush of the USA
and President Calderon of Mexico are meeting in Montebello, Quebec to
discuss a new secretive arrangement called the Security and Prosperity
Partnership (SPP). The objective of the corporate driven SPP is to make
business between the three countries easier by dismantling social and
environmental standards and making it easier for big business to move their
factories and products. At the same time the mobility of regular people
remains restricted and "guest worker" programs will be expanded, increasing
the exploitation of immigrant and migrant workers and driving down wages for
all workers. The intensified surveillance, harassment and criminalization
of communities of colour, poor people and social movements continues under
this new 'war on terrorism' policy.
The SPP is yet another international trade agreement which will contribute
to the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer everywhere. Join us
for this evening of education, sharing and discussion. We will be talking
about:
- the history and effects of neoliberal globalization and trade
agreements like the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the World
Trade Organization (WTO) and the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC)
- how the SPP will effect our communities, our health and the
environment
- how grassroots organizations like the Bus Riders Union can best
contribute to fighting neoliberal globalization and the SPP
*Snacks, tea and coffee will be served. Children are welcome!*
