Ride with Dignity: Bus Riders get Organized to Fight Overcrowding and Long Waits!

Public Meeting

Saturday October 14, 2006 at 2pm

Organizing Centre for Social and Economic Justice

672 E. Broadway St. (at Fraser)

Tired of long waits and getting to work late? Disgusted at the conditions of dirty and old broken down buses? Angry about paying high fares and getting on overcrowded buses?

Wait no more! Come out and participate in the Bus Riders Union public meeting on Sat October 14, 2006.

In October, TransLink will be making key decisions that will impact our lives in the next 7 years. They will be voting whether or not to pass the Evergreen Line, which is a new skytrain line running from Lougheed to Port Coquitlam that will cost $1 billion and coming straight out of bus riders pockets. The cost for the Evergreen Line is no more buses until 2013 because with the Canada Line and Evergreen Line TransLink will be running into a deficit of $200 million per year.

In a period of urgent crisis of mass overcrowding, high fares and late buses, the priority must be bus riders' transit needs, health and safety. This means putting more money to buy more buses and replace the old-broken down buses. Instead, TransLink continues their privatization agenda by taking bus riders' money and putting it in for-profit mega-projects such as the Canada Line and the Evergreen Line, serving less than 5% of bus riders and lining the pockets of big businesses.

Bus Riders Union organizers invite you to share your experiences, build an understanding of why fares are getting higher and the bus service is getting worse, and how bus riders can work together to make sure the transit system meets our needs.

Why should you come out to this meeting? Your participation matters and shapes how and if we'll win this campaign. If you want the transit system to meet your family's needs and yours, join many other bus riders like yourself who are fighting to ride with dignity!

There's thousands of bus riders putting up with inadequate service but we're each struggling on our own. It's time to struggle together!
