UPDATE: MAY 7, 2006
- Political prisoner Gloria Arenas started a hunger strike May 6 in solidarity with the people of San Salvador Atenco. She is demanding the following:
1. A halt to the criminalization of the struggle of San Salvador Atenco
2. Freedom to all the political prisoners from the Front in Defence of the Land (FPDT) and allied collectives and individuals who were present in solidarity.
3. Cancellation of the arrest orders against America Del Valle (the daughter of FPDT leader - currently in custody - Ignacio Del Valle) and against members of the FPDT.
4. For the police to disclose the whereabouts of the youths Cesar Del Valle Ramirez (Son of Ignacio Del Valle) and Saul Rios Romero. Both were disappeared by the federal preventive police (PFP) and the Mexico State Police.
5. That those police responsible for the rapes of arrested women and the murder of the child Javier Cortez be brought to justice.
- 100 other political prisoners from San Salvador Atenco - including Ignacio Del Valle (FPDT leader, held in the military controlled maximum security prison of La Palma)- are also on hunger strike.
- The Committee against Torture and Impunity reports testimony from a Spanish woman who was arrested that she was raped by Mexican police.
- The Other Campaign, the Front in Defence of the Land (FPDT) and allied organizations are strongly denouncing the efforts by the Mexican corporate media, the Mexican political class and their allied intellectuals, to smear and defame the community of San Salvador Atenco, the FPDT, the Other Campaign, human rights activists, the Zapatista National Liberation Army, and Sub Comandante Marcos (spokesman for the Other Campaign and the Zapatistas). They are asking for strong solidarity and support from independent media all over the world - and reminding everyone that the main media monopolies in Mexico recently benefited immensely from a new law passed by the government of Vicente Fox - the so-called "Ley Televisa".

These past 3rd and 4th of May, the Mexican government decided to give an exemplary punishment to the inhabitants of San Salvador, Atenco in the State of Mexico, ordering a brutal repression where 3.000 members of the Preventive Federal Police and the Government of the State of Mexico participated, with an approximated balance of 279 people detained amongst them, farmers of Atenco, flower street merchants, workers from a telephone company and from governmental medical services, students of different universities, professionals and more than 60 women; a number not yet determined of people are disappeared, a 14 year old young person assassinated with a 38 caliber firearm; a young person in state of comma and around 50 people severely wounded, as well as innumerable material and psychological damages to the population. According to witnesses, the armed police shot to kill.
This action is one but of many others that this town has endured, since in November of 2001 they initiated an wide social mobilization and a legal battle to avoid being displaced from the land they use for cultivation, 4500 hectares altogether, in which there were plans to build an International Airport . In the mid 2002, the government of president Vicente Fox had to rescind his expropriation decree, which caused the loss of a great deal for business and political groups. This became to be an intolerable defeat for these powerful groups, thus resulting in a wave of systematic harassment against the community. Nevertheless, the people of Atenco, far from abandoning the battle, united in solidarity to other group struggles, and through their organization, the Peoples Front in Defense of the Land (FPDT - Frente de Pueblos en Defensa de la Tierra ), openly supported the Zapatista National Liberation Army EZLN (Spanish acronym) adhering to their call for the Other Campaign.
The Peoples Front in Defense of the Land was supporting a group of flower street merchants, members of their organization, who were violently removed from an area of town which for years they had used to sell their flowers in the Municipality of the Texcoco, where there are plans to build a Wal-Mart commercial center.
Ignacio del Valle, leader of the FPDT, was brutally beaten, tortured and taken to the maximum security jail of La Palma , while his wife Trinidad Ramirez and their daughter America La Valle are sought by the police forces and may be detained at any time; their 18 years old son, Cesar was missing and today, the Human Rights Center of Agustin Pro reports that he is in jail in the penitentiary of Santiaguito. According to Trinidad Ramirez, her son Cesar and herself took refuge in the house of a relative and when a helicopter began to fly over the house, Cesar asked for her blessings and said that he loved her, that he would always be close to her.
>From where she was hiding Trinidad could hear her sons screams of pain when the police began to kick him while shouting: go to hell you damned rebels!
The police surrounded the town and did not allow the entrance of ambulances to take care of the wounded, as it were the case of Alexis Benumea who was hit by a tear gas bomb in the head causing him a skull fracture, exposure of encephalic mass and 30 percent cerebral bruising. This young person remained for 12 hours without medical attention and at this moment is in a state of comma. One of the Fronts leaders declared that the police entered houses without a search warrant, beating women and children and that apparently there is more wounded who have not left their homes for fear. The relatives of the detained women denounced that many of them have been raped and it is also said that a man was also raped. The authorities ackowledged that they detained the following foreigners: Samantha Diezmar ( Germany ), Maria Sastres Torrida ( Spain ), Cristina Vals Fernández ( Spain ), Mario Alberto Aguirre Tomic ( Chile ) and Valentina Palma Novoa (Chile) but were not allowed to be seen and were finally deported. A Chilean detainee declared that she was sexually attacked after her detention in Atenco. Concerned about the situation of these foreigners, a group of people congregated at the International Airport of Mexico City to know of their whereabouts, but they were removed by the Preventive Federal Police.
To this moment, the government of Mexico has not responded to the demands from international organizations such as Amnesty International, to provide a detailed list with the names of the hundreds of prisoners. On the contrary, it maintains a threatening and arrogant tone as demonstrated by the declarations of President Vicente Fox when stating That small group is an insult to the society, or the declarations of Humberto Benítez Treviño, Secretary General of Government of the State of Mexico, who said that It will only be possible to engage in a dialogue when all the leaders are captured. That is, first they kill, detain, torture, rape, seed terror, and after that they will be willing to engage in a dialogue.
Those who were detained, on top of having been savagely beaten (many of them minors , women, and elderly people), are denied legal defense, as lawyers have denounced that the Public Ministry has refused to provide even a file number and have been denied access to the penitentiary. A lawyer, Damián Gustavo Camacho, of the Independent Commission of Human Rights of Morelos, went to the call of the people of Atenco to offer his legal support, but to this moment he is missing. When questions were raised to the government of the State of Mexico in regards to the viciousness whereupon the prisoners were treated, the Government Secretary responded there will be no explanation, and there is nothing to be justified.
Four people are hospitalized and handcuffed to their beds. Arnulfo Pacheco Cervantes a semi-paraplegic and with fractures on two ribs, Ramira Zavala (61 years) with a perforated lung, Edgar Santiago (21 years) with fracture of right cube and Rodolfo Rivera Galicia (57 years) also with fracture in the right cube. The mass media have raised calls to the highest court of the nation, requesting a strong hand against the peasant population and justifying the brutality with which the police acted. It is necessary to remember that this year, the owners of both main televising partnerships (Televisa and Azteca Television) were benefited by the Television Law, which gives them greater monopolistic power in the use of the media.
Calls of repudiation of these facts in Mexico and different parts of the world was not delayed, road and highway blockades in Mexico, protests in Mexican consulates in cities of the United States, Canada, Spain and Austria, the start of a hunger strike by Gloria Arenas Agis, political prisoner and by the prisoners of Atenco.
The disdain shown by the federal government towards the settlers of Atenco is the same shown by the government a few months ago towards the 65 miners buried and left in the depths of the mine Pasta de Conchos in the State of Coahuila and the repression and death of 2 metallurgical workers of Sicartsa, in the State of Michoacán.
Just a few months away from the end of his mandate, the political class in power has decided to create a state of intimidation that foments the vote of fear, to strike the adherent organizations to the other campaign and with it to try to perpetuate themselves in power to give continuity to their neo-liberal project.
Faced with the gravity of this situation, different organizations in Vancouver have gathered and come together as agroup The Other Campaign-Vancouver and Organizations in Solidarity with Atenco and summoned to a protest for Monday, May the 08 at 11:00 AM at the Mexican Consulate in Downtown Vancouver, located at 1177 West Hastings Street , between Bute and Thurlow.

ACTUALIZACION: MAYO 7, 2006
- La prisionera política Gloria Arenas esta en huelga de hambre desde Mayo 6 en solidaridad con el pueblo de San Salvador Atenco. Sus demandas son las siguientes:
1. Alto a la criminalización de la lucha de San Salvador Atenco
2. Liberación de todos y todas las presas políticas del FPDT y colectivos y personas que acudieron a solidarizarse.
3. Cancelación de las órdenes de aprehensión a América del Valle y contra miembros del FPDT, cese a la persecución de los compañeros y compañeras.
4. Presentación de los jóvenes Cesar del Valle Ramírez y Saúl Ríos Romero desaparecidos por la PFP y la policía del Estado de México.
5. Castigo penal a los policías responsables de violar a nuestras compañeras y del asesinato del niño Javier Cortes.
- Otros 100 prisioneros de San Salvador Atenco - incluyendo Ignacio Del Valle (líder del FPDT, detenido en la prisión de maxima seguridad de La Palma) - también están en huelga de hambre.
- El Comite en Contra de La Tortura y la Inpunidad reporta testimonio de una mujer española arrestada en Atenco que fue violada por la policía.
- La otra campaña, el Frente por la Defensa de La Tierra (FPDT) y organizaciones aliadas fuertemente denuncian los esfuerzos descarados por parte de los medios corporativos mexicanos, la clase política mexicana y sus intelectuales aliados, de difamar a la comunidad de San Salvador Atenco, al FPDT, a La Otra Campaña, activistas de derechos humanos, el Ejercito Zapatista de Liberacion Nacional, y al Sub Comandante Marcos (vocero del EZLN y La Otra Campaña). Piden fuerte solidaridad y apoyo por parte de medios independientes en todo el mundo - y le recuerdan a todos que las principales empresas mediaticas en México recientemente beneficiaron inmensamente de una nueva ley pasada por el gobierno del Presidente Vicente Fox - la llamada Ley Televisa.

Los pasados 3 y 4 de mayo, el gobierno mexicano decidió dar un castigo ejemplar a los pobladores de San Salvador Atenco en el Estado de México, ordenando una represión brutal en la que participaron 3,000 efectivos de la Policía Federal Preventiva y del Gobierno del Estado de México, con un saldo aproximado de 279 detenidos entre campesinos de Atenco, vendedores de flores, telefonistas, trabajadores del servicio medico gubernamental, estudiantes de diferentes universidades, profesionistas y mas de 60 mujeres; numero aun no precisado de desaparecidos, un joven de 14 años asesinado con arma de fuego calibre 34; un joven en estado de coma y alrededor de 50 heridos de gravedad, así como innumerables daños materiales y psicológicos a la población, conforme testigos presénciales, la policía armada disparaba a matar.
Esta acción es una mas de muchas otras que este pueblo ha venido sufriendo, desde que en Noviembre del 2001 iniciaron una amplia movilización social y una batalla legal para evitar ser despojados de sus tierras de cultivo, 4500 hectáreas en total, en las que se pretendía construir un Aeropuerto Internacional. A mediados del 2002, el gobierno del presidente Vicente Fox tuvo que dar marcha atrás a su decreto expropiatorio, lo que provoco que poderosos grupos empresariales y políticos perdieran un gran negocio. Esta derrota se convirtió en un hecho intolerable y el hostigamiento se hizo sistemático. Sin embargo, el pueblo de Atenco, lejos de abandonar su lucha, se unió en solidaridad a otras luchas, y a través de su organización, el Frente de Pueblos en Defensa de la Tierra , apoyaron abiertamente al Ejercito Zapatista de Liberación Nacional adhiriéndose a su llamado de la Otra Campaña.
El Frente de Pueblos en Defensa de la Tierra estaba apoyando a un grupo de vendedores de flores, miembros de su organización, quienes fueron violentamente desalojados de los lugares que por años habían ocupado para vender sus flores en el Municipio de Texcoco, lugar en el que se pretende construir un centro comercial Wal-Mart.
Ignacio del Valle, dirigente del FPDT, fue brutalmente golpeado y torturado y llevado a la cárcel de máxima seguridad La Palma , mientras su esposa Trinidad Ramírez y su hija América La Valle son buscadas por los cuerpos policíacos y en cualquier momento pueden ser detenidas; a su hijo Cesar de 18 años lo mantuvieron desaparecido y el dia de hoy, el Centro de Derechos Humanos Agustin Pro reporta que se encuentra encarcelado en el penal de Santiaguito. Según narra Trinidad Ramírez ella y su hijo Cesar se refugiaron en casa de un familiar y cuando un helicóptero empezó a sobrevolar la casa, Cesar le pidió su bendición y le dijo que la quería, que siempre estaría cerca de ella. Desde donde estuvo escondida pudo escuchar los gritos de dolor de su hijo cuando la policía lo empezó a patear mientras gritaban: pinches revoltosos, ya se los llevo la chingada!
La policía sitio el pueblo y no permitió el ingreso de ambulancias para atender a los heridos, como fue el caso de Alexis Benumea a quien le exploto una bomba de gas lacrimógeno en la cabeza y le provoco fractura de cráneo, exposición de masa encefálica y 30 por ciento de hematoma cerebral. Este joven permaneció 12 hrs sin atención médica y en estos momentos se encuentra en estado de coma.
Uno de los líderes del frente declaro que la policía entraba a las casas sin orden de cateo, golpeando a mujeres y niños y que al parecer hay más heridos que no han salido por miedo. Las familias de las mujeres detenidas denunciaron que muchas de ellas han sido violadas y se habla también de un hombre violado. Las autoridades aceptaron que detuvieron a los extranjeros Samantha Diezmar (Alemania), Maria Sastres Torrida (Espana), Cristina Vals Fernández (Espana), Mario Alberto Aguirre Tomic (Chile) y Valentina Palma Novoa (Chile) pero no los presentaron y finalmente fueron deportados. Una detenida chilena declaro que fue agredida sexualmente después de su detención en Atenco. Preocupados por la situación de estos extranjeros, un grupo de personas se congregaron en el Aeropuerto Internacional de la Ciudad de México para saber de su paradero, pero fueron desalojados por la policía federal preventiva.
Hasta el momento, el gobierno de México no ha respondido a las exigencias de Organismos Internacionales como Amnistía Internacional, de proporcionar una lista detallada con los nombres de los cientos de detenidos. En contrapartida, mantiene un tomo amenazador y prepotente como lo demuestran las declaraciones del Presidente Vicente Fox al declarar que Ese pequeño grupo es una afrenta a la sociedad, o las declaraciones de Humberto Benítez Treviño, Secretario General de Gobierno del Estado de México, quien declaro Que solo será posible el dialogo hasta que todos los dirigentes sean capturados. O sea, primero matan, detienen, torturan, violan, siembran el terror, y después estarán dispuestos a dialogar.
A los detenidos, además de que fueron salvajemente golpeados después de que ya habían sido sometidos (muchos de ellos menores de edad, mujeres, y personas de la tercera edad), se les pretende dejar en la indefensión legal, pues los abogados han denunciado que el Ministerio Publico se ha negado a proporcionar hasta el numero de expediente y se les ha negado el acceso al penal. El abogado Damián Gustavo Camacho, de la Comisión Independiente de Derechos Humanos de Morelos, acudió al llamado de la gente de Atenco para brindar su apoyo legal, pero hasta el momento se encuentra desaparecido.
Cuando al gobierno del Estado de México se le cuestiono por la saña con que fueron tratados los detenidos, el Secretario de Gobierno respondió No habrá ninguna explicación, y no hay nada que justificar.
Cuatro personas se encuentran hospitalizadas y esposadas en sus camas. Arnulfo Pacheco Cervantes semiparaplejico y con fractura en dos costillas, Ramira Zavala (61 años) con un pulmón perforado, Edgar Santiago (21 años) con fractura de cubito derecho y Rodolfo Rivera Galicia (57 años) también con fractura en el cubito derecho.
Los medios masivos de comunicación se han erigido en el más alto tribunal de la nación, pidiendo mano dura contra la población campesina y justificando la brutalidad con la que la policía actuó. Hay que recordar que este año, los dueños de los dos principales consorcios televisivos (Televisa y Televisión Azteca) fueron beneficiados por la Ley Televisa , la cual les da un mayor poder monopólico en el uso de los medios.
La respuesta de repudio a estos hechos no se ha hecho esperar en México y en diferentes partes del mundo. Bloqueo de avenidas y carreteras en México, protestas en consulados mexicanos en ciudades de Estados Unidos, Canadá, España y Austria. El inicio de una huelga de hambre de Gloria Arenas Agis, presa política y los presos de Atenco.
El desprecio mostrado por el gobierno federal hacia los pobladores de Atenco es el mismo que mostró hace unos meses por los 65 mineros sepultados y abandonados en las profundidades de la mina de Pasta de Conchos en el Estado de Coahuila y la represión y muerte de 2 obreros metalúrgicos de Sicartsa, en el Estado de Michoacán.
A escasos meses de que termine su mandato, la clase política en el poder ha decidido crear un estado de intimidación que fomente el voto del miedo, golpear a las organizaciones adherentes a la otra campana y con ello intentar perpetuarse en el poder para dar continuidad a su proyecto neoliberal.
Ante la gravedad de esta situación, diferentes organizaciones en Vancouver nos constituimos en el grupo Adherentes a la Otra Campaña en Vancouver y Organizaciones en Apoyo a Atenco y convocamos a una protesta en el Consulado de México en Vancouver ubicado en 1177 West Hastings entre Bute y Thurlow, Downtown.
