BRU Takes to the Streets on International Women's Day!
Tuesday, March 7th 2006

Vancouver - The Bus Riders Union will join women locally and around the world on International Women's Day to celebrate and honour women's leadership in anti-imperialist movements. As attacks continue on working-class women, in particular women of colour and Aboriginal women, the BRU sees the need to continue and support the militant struggles of women against economic exploitation and oppression.

Working-class women continue to bear the brunt of neoliberal policies that benefit the rich. In Canada and abroad, working-class women are struggling to maintain access to public services such as transit and healthcare because of privatization. Women in Third World nations are also facing increasing militarization that is justified by the racist "War on Terror" ideology and wars of aggression on communities of colour. BRU organizer Zailda Chan says "We understand that working-class women are the most impacted at the intersection of patriarchy, systemic racism and national oppression, and that they must be at the front of social movements here and abroad in the struggle for genuine liberation and justice for all."

In September 2004, the BRU published "Women in Transit: Organizing for Social Justice in Our Communities," a document that outlined the impact of high fares and service cuts on working-class women, while also putting forth women's visions and recommendations to achieve social justice in the transit system. The Bus Riders Union prioritizes the leadership of women in the struggle for justice because, as organizer Jen Efting says, "working-class women, in particular women of colour and Aboriginal women, have the biggest stake in changing the system and give the most inspiration for leading an anti-sexist, anti-racist movement of poor and working-class people."

Join the BRU and others on International Women's Day to remember and to honour the struggles of women around the world! The rally and march, organized by Grassroots Women, begins at 5:30pm at the Vancouver Public Library.

Power to the Sisters, and therefore to the Class!
