Canada Line Destination: PRIVATIZATION

Rally at Canada Line Office to Demand Billions for Buses, People before Profit!

Join the Bus Riders Union on Wednesday July 26, 2006 at 6pm as we picket outside of the Canada Line office to expose and oppose the Canada Line as a racist, anti-people project that uses public money to advance the interests of corporations and neo-liberal governments.

No to Privatization! While the Canada Line is being built to go to Richmond and the Vancouver Airport, its real destination is the privatization of public transit. The Canada Line is the largest public-private partnership in Canadian history. The majority of funding for the Canada Line will come from TransLink, the province of BC, and the federal government. The federal government, rather than putting money into vital public services, is expanding the military and funding privatization schemes that only benefit the rich.

Stop the Racist War at Home and Abroad! At home and abroad, the Canada line is an attack on the rights of working class people, particularly people of color and Aboriginal people. The Canada is being built by SNC-Lavalin, a Canadian engineering firm that made bullets for use in the occupations of Iraq, Afghanistan and Haiti. Here in Vancouver, migrant workers from Costa Rica, China and the Philippines are being paid sub-minimum wages to build the Canada Line. This harkens back to the long Canadian legacy of using migrant workers as cheap labour - a legacy that began during the construction of the CPR Railroad, and continues today through the Live-In Caregiver Program, the exploitation of migrant farm workers, and now, through the Construction of the Canada Line.

Billions for Buses, No Overcrowding, No Long Waits! 80% of transit users ride the bus exclusively - yet TransLink keeps pouring billions into privatized Skytrain lines. Long waits, broken down buses and overcrowding are everyday experiences for bus riders. We demand to ride with dignity! Decent bus service includes better service at night, buses that are wheelchair and stroller accessible, no overcrowding and more frequent and reliable service.

When: Wednesday, July 26 at pm

Where: Canada Line Office (409 Granville Street)
