Part Time Community Organizer
Are you interested in social justice and community organizing? Do you want to get involved in an organization fighting against racism, sexism, and the oppression of working class people?
The Bus Riders Union (BRU) is seeking a community organizer with passion for anti-racism, anti-sexism and anti-poverty work. The Vancouver Bus Riders Union, founded in 2001, represents the mass transit and public health needs of the transit dependent. We seek to build a democratic, multi-lingual, gender balanced organization whose leadership and membership reflect the racial and gender make-up of bus riders.
You will work closely with other organizers to outreach to the community. You will be organizing on the buses, building the BRU one bus rider at a time. In addition, you will also be responsible for coordinating other on-the-bus organizers to attend on the bus organizing sessions. Training is provided.
The successful applicant must speak languages other than English – we are particularly looking for people who are fluent in spoken Punjabi and Cantonese. Youth from marginalized communities are strongly encouraged to apply.
Applicants must:
▫ Be self-directed
▫ Be willing to work collectively
▫ Be comfortable speaking in public
▫ Have a strong interest in social justice and community organizing
▫ Experience in community organizing, grassroots activism or student activism is definitely a plus!
Compensation:
$12 an hour, for 10 hours per week. This is a 12 month contract.
Application process:
▫ Please submit a letter of introduction (maximum 2 pages long) to the Bus Riders Union Planning Committee including:
o a brief self-introduction including your name, contact information and experiences with community organizing, volunteering and/or activism
o Your knowledge of the Bus Riders Union, and why you are interested in working with us.
o Your knowledge of marginalized communities in the Lower Mainland.
▫ Letters must be received by February 22, 2006
▫ Letters can be mailed or e-mailed to the following addresses:
