**** BRU PUBLIC MEETING****
Sunday, April 30, 1-3pm
Vancouver Public Library
(350 West Georgia Street)
Struggling with high fares? Fed up with overcrowding and long waits? Angry
about Skytrain Police and racial profiling? Join the Bus Riders Union and
our allies to fight back against privatization of transit and attacks on
our communities! Share your experiences and get involved with the BRU.
Learn about the BRU"s two new campaigns:
"RIDE WITH DIGNITY: STOP OVERCROWDING and LONG WAITS"
"JUSTICE FOR RIDERS: WE WON'T RIDE WITH FEAR!"
TransLink continues to ignore the safety and needs of bus riders. Even
though nearly 80% of transit-dependent people rely on buses, TransLink is
unwilling to prioritize buying new and more buses. Fares have gone up
three times in five years, but service has been cut. So where is our
money going? In partnering up with big businesses like SNC Lavalin to
build the "Canada Line", TransLink is funnelling $1.9 billion of public
money towards a company that is profiting from war in Iraq, Haiti and
Afghanistan. While TransLink is supporting the war abroad on people of
colour under the "War on Terror" ideology, Translink is also allocating
$10 million towards hiring, training and arming the Skytrain police who
have a track record of assaulting and racially profiling transit users,
particularly people of colour and youth.
It is an injustice to bus riders when high fares and poor service restrict
our access to the political, economic and social life of our cities, and
then treat us like criminals because we can't afford to pay expensive
fares. It is a further injustice when bus riders have to put up with
run-down, overcrowded buses and lengthy waits. Bus riders are outraged
and will continue to fight for justice and dignity against big business
and TransLink.
At the public meeting we will hear from BRU organizers and guest speakers
from No On Is Illegal and Vancouver Rape Relief talking about the strugg
