Bus Riders Union Celebrates
4 years of grassroots organizing for Transit for All!

The Bus Riders Union is proud to announce A Celebration of Grassroots Organizing, an exciting evening of political discussion, food and live music to dance the night away! Please join us on December 11 2005 from 6 to 9:30pm at the Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House (800 E. Broadway near Fraser).

The Bus Riders Union is a grassroots anti-racist anti-sexist organization fighting to put the needs of transit dependent people at the centre of public policy. Following the BRU annual general meeting (from 4-5pm), we invite you to come out and enjoy food, live music and a retrospective on the last 4 years of BRU organizing.

We have come a long way and have much to celebrate. Starting with an initial membership of 100, we have now grown to an organization of over 800 members, thousands of supporters and a core group of at least 20 committed volunteers. Under the broad call for More Buses and Lower Fares, we've worked on a number of different campaigns ranging from Billions for Buses! to our current campaign to Lower the Fare Now: For Community Health and Social Justice!. Last year, we won our campaign Night Owl Buses: End the Curfew Now! which saw the re-instatement of late-night bus service used in large part by late-night workers of colour.

We are honoured to announce that Jack O'Dell, long-time organizer for social justice and a respected leader of the American civil rights movement, will be providing a keynote speech on the importance of grassroots organizing. The evening will also feature a multimedia presentation on the history of the BRU and live salsa music.

Please contact us or drop by the office to pick up your tickets, priced at an affordable $5-$10 (sliding scale). Everyone is welcome and no one will be turned away. We especially encourage organizers who have worked with us in the past and all those who have participated in our public meetings, demonstrations and other events and actions in the last 4 years to come celebrate with us. Join us to celebrate our victories and prepare for the continued struggle for the rights of transit-dependent people in the Lower Mainland!
