Join the Bus Riders Union in a
Celebration of Grassroots Organizing

Sunday December 11th, 2005

Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House (800 E. Broadway near Fraser)

6pm - 9:30pm

The Bus Riders Union is proud to announce A Celebration of Grassroots Organizing, an exciting evening to bring together bus riders, members, organizers, family, friends and supporters of the Bus Riders Union to celebrate 4 years of grassroots organizing as we continue to build the movement, one bus rider at a time. There will be delicious food, a multi-media presentation, a keynote speaker and political discussion, and live salsa music and dancing!

The Bus Riders Union is an anti-racist, anti-sexist, multi-racial, multi-lingual grassroots organization led by women that fights to put the needs of transit dependent people at the centre of public policy.

We have come a long way and have much to celebrate. Starting with an initial membership of 100, we have now grown to an organization of 900 members, with thousands of supporters and a core group of at least 20 committed organizers. Under the broad call for More Buses and Lower Fares, we've worked on a number of different campaigns ranging from Billions for Buses! to our current campaign to Lower the Fare Now: For Community Health and Social Justice!. Last year, we won our campaign Night Owl Buses: End the Curfew Now! which saw the re-instatement of late-night bus service used in large part by late-night workers of colour.

We are honoured to announce that Jack O'Dell, long-time organizer for social justice and a respected leader of the American civil rights movement, will be providing a keynote speech on the importance of grassroots organizing.

Tickets are $5 - $10 (sliding scale). If you would like to reserve or buy tickets please contact us or drop by the office. Everyone is welcome and no one will be turned away for lack of funds. We especially encourage organizers who have worked with us in the past and all those who have participated in our public meetings, demonstrations and other events and actions in the last 4 years to come celebrate with us. Join us as we celebrate our collective victories and as we struggle to build the collective power of bus riders!

*Childcare will be provided.

*Dinner and non-alcoholic drinks will be served.
