Information Night for the
School for Grassroots Organizing
Wednesday, May 4th, 6:30-8
65 West Cordova Street (across from Army and Navy)
Join the Bus Riders Union on May 4th for an information night on our Second Annual School for Grassroots Organizing. This short evening program will introduce the school, provide background on BRU organizing in a multi-media presentation, and outline what participants can expect in the ten-week organizer-training program. Everyone interested in the School for Grassroots Organizing is encouraged to attend.
As you may know, the Bus Riders Union is a grassroots project to build a working class multi-racial women-led organization fighting for the rights of transit-dependent communities in the Lower Mainland. We develop campaigns that address the concrete struggles of transit-dependent people as part of building an international movement for social justice.
In a supportive, challenging and creative environment, participants in the BRU School for Grassroots Organizing will learn and engage with the theory and the practice of organizing for social justice. We will discuss the different forces of oppression and exploitation - from patriarchy to systemic racism to capitalism - and engage with the history of people's resistance both locally and globally. Participants will learn to build anti-racist, anti-sexist class-consciousness through popular education and direct contact organizing, and to strategize and carry out grassroots campaigns in their communities.
The School for Grassroots Organizing runs May 29th to August 1st, 2005, with two three-hour sessions per week. Applications are due May 6th. We welcome and prioritize women and people from communities of colour and Aboriginal communities. Some honoraria and childcare subsidies are available. Space is limited so apply now!
The School for Grassroots Organizing brochure and application is available at http://bru.resist.ca/summer_2005__school_for_grassroots_organizing2. Drop by the BRU office, call or email us for more information.
The May 4th information night is child friendly - wheelchair accessible - snacks provided
