Speak-out and Mass Leaflet Against the Fare Increase
Saturday November 27th
1 PM Broadway Skytrain Station
Join the Bus Riders Union this Saturday to speak-out against the fare increase that TransLink has planned for January 2005.
The TransLink board will be voting at their December 8th meeting whether or not to proceed with the fare increase that would be the third in five years and would impact adult, Handidart and U-pass fares. The Speak-out and Mass Leaflet this Saturday is an important opportunity for bus riders to come together to assert our right to affordable public transit and to inspire more bus riders involved in the campaign to Stop the Fare Increase.
Over the last five months The Bus riders Union has been building momentum of our campaign to Stop the Fare increase by talking with thousands of bus riders on buses, holding public meetings, holding public rallies and mass leaflets and speaking at TransLink meetings. If TransLink votes on December 8th to increase fares, the Bus Riders Union will respond with a one-day fare strike. A fare strike means that bus riders would, on-masse, not pay fares as a form of collective protest and action against the fare increase.
This Saturday we will have sign up sheets available for bus riders who want to attend or speak at the December 8th TransLink meeting and who want to get involved in the Stop the Fare Increase campaign and the Fare Strike. When buses riders won back the Night Owl buses in March 2004, we proved that when we organize together we can fight for our right to affordable and accessible public transit and win!
