Hi all --

As Bread Uprising grows, we've been feeling the need for a statement of
vision that would help focus and guide our work, and be a source of
inspiration and re-invigoration. Yesterday at the Bread Team meeting, we
used a writing exercise from Alexis Pauline-Gumbs, inspired by the
Combahee River Collective statement, to craft a working vision statement,
which we're really excited to share with y'all!!!

This is very much a work-in-progress. In fact, it will probably never be
finished. Right now it only reflects the thoughts of those of us who
participated in writing it. But we hope it will resonate with the rest of
the bakery as well. How does it resonate with you? Are there things you
feel strongly should be added or taken away? Let us know!

Here goes:

We believe that every person has a right to food that is appropriate to
that person and their culture. By food, we mean delicious food, nutritious
food, comfort food, food of ritual, and food of celebration. By the right
to food we mean not just immediate access to food on the table, but the
resources and time to choose, grow, store, preserve, prepare and share
food.

We believe in an economy based on love and solidarity, where people can be
daily bread for each other, and provide for our communal well-being.

We understand that people's access to food is limited by oppression in all
forms, including the exploitative and dehumanizing relationships
structured by the capitalist system, the global dominance of a destructive
and profit-driven industrial food system, sexism, racism, heterosexism,
trans-phobia and classism.

And so, we:
* Knead relationships of dignity, respect and appreciation centered around
food
* Leaven the growing struggle for food sovereignty in North Carolina
* Form a community institution rooted in queer, people-of-color and
working class communities
* Bake and eat delicious bread

In love and solidarity,
Tim, Noah, Serena, Thaddaeus, Emily, and Sarah

PS. Javiera stopped by this morning and took a first pass at crafting a
Spanish-language version of the statement. If anyone else is interested in
helping refine the language, let us know!
