Israeli Apartheid Week in Montreal began on March 1 at Concordia University
with a moving panel focused on “Apartheid in Canada”, featuring frontline
testimonies from Elizabeth Penashue, an Innu elder from Labrador, and Judy
Da Silva, a member of the Anishnabe nation from Grassy Narrows in
northwestern Ontario. Approximately 200 people attended this opening panel.
The next evening, in Ville St-Laurent, upwards of 400 people attended a
powerful lecture by Soha Bechara, a former political prisoner and resistance
fighter from Lebanon.

At both events, an Indigenous Solidarity Statement was read on behalf of the
organizers of Israeli Apartheid Week in Montreal. The statement is linked

Israeli Apartheid Week continues, with events between Wednesday, March 4
until next Monday, March 9. Selected events are highlighted below. A full

*Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW) is an annual international series of events
held in cities and campuses across the globe. Israeli Apartheid Week aims to
educate people about the nature of Israel as an apartheid system and to
build Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) campaigns as part of a
growing global BDS movement. In Montreal, local solidarity groups and
individuals have  planned nine full days of awareness-raising events ranging
from lectures and workshops to film screenings.*

Boycott Israel: The Apartheid State
a lecture featuring: Ronnie Kasrils*

Ronnie Kasrils was born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1938. Grandparents
Jewish immigrants from Czarist Russia (Lithuania). Joined ANC 1960 after
Sharpeville massacre. This led to a lifetime of political activism. Was a
member of ANC's military wing at its inception in 1961. Became chief of
military intelligence, operated from exile in neighbouring African states
and clandestinely in South Africa. For many years member of both ANC and
Communist Party national executive committees. Appointed deputy minister of
defence in South Africa's first democratic government (1994-99); Minister of
Water Affairs and Forestry (1999-2004); Minister Intelligence Services
(2004-2008). Has retired from government and devotes himself to writing,
lecturing and Palestine solidarity. Autobiography "Armed & Dangerous"
(publisher Jonathan Ball, Johannesburg). Married to a fellow struggle

Omar Barghouti is an independent Palestinian researcher, commentator and
human rights activist. Barghouti is a founding member of the Palestinian
campaign of boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against Israel to uphold
international law and universal human rights. He holds a bachelor's and
master's degrees in electrical engineering from Columbia University, NY. He
contributed to the philosophica volume, "Controversies and Subjectivity"
(John Benjamins, 2005) and to "The New Intifada: Resisting Israel's
Apartheid" (Verso Books, 2001). He advocates an ethical vision for a
unitary, secular democratic state in historic Palestine.

A mother from Gaza: Surviving Under Seige

*Laila El-Haddad is a freelance Palestinian journalist, media activist, and
mother from Gaza. She writes mainly for the Guardian and Aljazeera. She has
also appeared on CNN, the BBC, NPR, CBC, and Democracy Now among others.
Laila has been published in Le Monde Diplomatique, the New Statesmen, the
International Herald Tribune and the Washington Post among others. From
2003-2006, Laila was the Gaza correspondent for the the English Aljazeera
website. In 2007, she directed two Gaza-based documentaries for Al-Jazeera
International (Tunnel Trade and A Rafah Playground) with Tourist With A
Typewriter production company. Her award-winning blog "Raising Yousuf and
Noor: diary of a Palestinian mother explores the complex relationships
between the personal and political as she raises kids and negotiates
displacement and occupation. Laila is currently based in the United States.

No Pride In Apartheid: screening of two films
"Black Laundry" and "Zero Degrees of Separation"*

*Black Laundry is an Israeli group of lesbians, gays, bisexuals,
transgenders and others who utilize direct action to oppose the occupation
and to support other social justice causes. This short film chronicles the
emergence of the group and their activities.*

*Zero Degrees of Separation: is a feature-length documentary examining a
unique and complex relationship between two lovers, two nations that are
less than 3 kilometres apart. Selim and Ezra, a gay Palestinian-Israeli
couple, are fighting for the right to live together in Jerusalem. Edit and
Samira, a lesbian Palestinian-Israeli couple, are trying to figure out how
to bridge the divide between their cultures - often so close and yet so far.
Through the lives of these two couples we gain a unique perspective on the
Middle East conflict. Interwoven with archival footage belonging to director
Elle Flanders' grandparents, Zero Degrees of Separation takes on the larger
questions of humanity, conflict and nationalist aspiration.*

La Semaine contre l'apartheid israélien est un rendez-vous annuel mettant en
place différents événements dans plusieurs villes et campus partout sur la
planète. Il vise à sensibiliser les gens sur la situation d'apartheid que
maintient Israël à l'intérieur de ses frontières. L'organisation de cette
semaine vise aussi à mettre de l'avant différentes campagnes locales de
boycottage, de désinvestissement et de sanctions (BDS) contre Israël dans le
cadre de la mobilisation internationale sans cesse grandissante de la
campagne BDS. À Montréal, des groupes et des individus solidaires avec la
situation vécue par les Palestiniens organisent neuf jours de conférences,
d'ateliers et de présentation de films afin d'informer et de sensibiliser le
public sur
cet enjeu.

« Le boycottage d'Israël : l'État apartheid »

*Ronnie Kasrils: né à Johannesburg, en Afrique du Sud, en 1938. Ses
grand-parents étaient des immigrants juifs lituaniens fuyant la Russie
tsariste. À la suite du massacre de Sharpeville, il se joint à l'ANC, en
1960. Cela l'amènera à consacrer sa vie à l'activisme politique. Il est
membre de l'aile militaire de l'ANC à ses débuts, en 1961. Il devient chef
des services secrets militaires, opérant en exil à partir d'États
limitrophes ainsi qu'en Afrique du Sud de façon clandestine. Il a été membre
durant de nombreuses années des conseils exécutifs de l'ANC et du Parti
communiste. Nommé ministre de la Défense du premier gouvernement
démocratique de l'Afrique du Sud (1994-1999), il a également occupé les
postes de ministre des Eaux et forêts (1999-2004) et de ministre des
Services secrets (2004-2008). Aujourd'hui retiré du gouvernement, il se
consacre à l'écriture, donne des conférences et œuvre au sein du mouvement
de solidarité avec la Palestine. Il a publié son autobiographie, Armed &
Dangerous (éd. Jonathan Ball, Johannesburg). Marié à une compagne de

internationales et les droits universels de la personne. Omar Barghouti
détient une maîtrise en génie électrique de la Columbia University (New
York). Il a participé à la rédaction de l'ouvrage philosophique
Controversies and Subjectivity (John Benjamins, 2005) et à The New Intifada:
Resisting Israel's Apartheid (Verso Books, 2001), entre autres publications.

*Black Laundry est un groupe israélien de lesbiennes, gais, bisexuels,
transgenre et autres qui emploient l'action directe pour s'opposer à
l'occupation et appuyer d'autres causes de justice sociale. Ce court-métrage
raconte la création du groupe et montre ses activités.

Zero Degrees of Separation: documentaire long qui examine une relation
particulière et complexe entre les amants de deux couples et deux nations
situées à moins de trois kilomètres l'une de l'autre. Selim et Ezra, couple
gai israélo-palestinien, luttent pour le droit de vivre ensemble à
Jérusalem. Edit et Samira, couple lesbien israélo-palestinien, tente de
trouver des moyens de franchir le fossé qui séparent leurs cultures, souvent
si proches et pourtant si éloignées. À travers la vie de ces deux couples,
ce film offre une perspective unique sur le conflit du Moyen-Orient. Zero
Degrees of Separation, qui comporte aussi des séquences d'archives provenant
des grands-parents de la cinéaste, Elle Flanders, aborde de façon plus large
les questions liées à l'humanité, aux conflits et aux aspirations

*Slingshot Hip Hop: ce documentaire présente en parallèle les histoires de
jeunes Palestiniens vivant en Israël, à Gaza et en Cisjordanie. Ces jeunes
découvrent le hip-hop et l'utilisent comme moyen de dépasser les divisions
que leur imposent l'occupation israélienne et la pauvreté. Des check-points
intérieurs et du mur de séparation aux normes liées au genre et aux
différences générationnelles, voici l'histoire de jeunes gens qui traversent

La Semaine contre l'apartheid israélien est un rendez-vous annuel

Cette année, pour sa cinquième édition, la Semaine contre l'apartheid
israélien a lieu juste après l'attaque barbare d'Israël contre les
Gazaouis. Récemment, à Montréal et dans le monde, des milliers de
personnes sont descendues dans la rue pour dénoncer les atrocités
commises par Israël. Ces dernières années, on constate une forte
augmentation des textes et analyses divers cherchant à étoffer le
dossier de l'apartheid israélien et à dénoncer celui-ci, y compris des
rapports émanant d'organismes internationaux et de défense des droits de
la personne, ainsi que des témoignages et enquêtes publiées par des
leaders politiques, des penseurs, des universitaires et des activistes.

Depuis les attaques de Gaza, ces voix s'élèvent de plus en plus fort, et
elles ont attiré   l'attention du monde entier. L'objectif de la Semaine
contre l'apartheid israélien est de contribuer à cette opposition
internationale à l'apartheid israélien.
