He took sanctuary in 2006 to avoid deportation by the Canadian government back to Algeria. Ever since, Kader and his community ? his friends and supporters across Montreal, and across the world ? have been working to push for Kader to be able to remain here with his community in Montreal. Much has happened over the last 3 years but still Kader spends every day and every night in the church, facing the imminent threat of deportation. Kader and his supporters have organized three years of community events at the church, dozens of marches and demonstrations in Montreal, across Canada and across the world. 3 Canadian ministers of immigration have come and gone. Hundreds of Montreal and nation-wide organizations, politicians, celebrity artists and musicians have written letters of support. 25 editions of Kader's monthly radio show have been broadcasted from the church rectory. 3 years of daily visits from friends and supporters bringing food and other supplies and 3 years of weekly strategizing meetings with Kader and his support committee have gone by. Kader has learned to use screen-reading computer software for blind people, as well as learned to play the piano, the guitar, the recorder and the melodica, and released a CD of original works with Montreal-based artist Tu-Three. He has seen 5 people come forward to financially sponsor him. He has been the subject of an endless stream of newspaper and magazine articles, radio and film documentaries and TV specials featuring his struggle for justice. Supporters have taken trips to Ottawa to strategize with members of parliament who are also working to get Kader's status regularized. Energy, support and creativity have been pouring into the campaign to have Kader stay with his community in Montreal. Stranded in santuary for 3 years, Kader and his supporters ask you to come out to ensure that our message is heard loud and clear: LET HIM OUT! LET HIM STAY! 3 YEARS IS TOO LONG. Please come out on ***SATURDAY, JANUARY 17th*** to show your support for Kader, and to demand to the new minister of immigration, Jason Kenney, that Kader be granted his status IMMEDIATELY. We will be meeting at the church for a rally with Kader, and then marching through his home neighbourhood of Pointe St.Charles. We are inviting supporting organizations to bring their banners and placards to show their support for Kader. We will also have materials on had for groups to make their own signs. Food & Warm beverages will be served! ::::BACKGROUND:::: In November 2005, Abdelkader Belaouni (Kader) was told that his application to stay in Canada was rejected and that he would be deported. Kader's refugee claim was rejected by the Immigration and Refugee Board Commissioner, Laurier Thibault, who refused 99% of the cases placed before him in a two-year period. Later decisions by Immigration Canada failed to take into account the fact that Kader is blind, and, as a result, experiences significant discrimination and barriers, particularly when it comes to finding stable employment. Kader's life has already been uprooted on two separate occasions. First he escaped the brutal civil war in Algeria, which saw hundreds of thousands of civilians die; the second time he fell privy to the post-September 11th Immigration and Naturalization Services (INS) "special registration" program in the United States, which applied to all men born in Muslim-majority countries living in the United States. Facing deportation from Canada, Kader took the courageous decision to stand up for his dignity as a human being, and insist on his right to stay in Montreal. His struggle mirrors that of many other refugees and migrants in Canada and around the world, who are uprooted and denied the right to seek a life of security and dignity. Like Kader, many refugees and migrants become economically marginalized, forced to live in precarious circumstances, imprisoned, and threatened with deportation. Kader's decision to stay in Canada has met with an outpouring of support from his friends, as well as from individuals and organizations across Quebec, Canada and even internationally. Over 70 organizations and networks, representing more than 250 groups in Quebec alone, support status for Kader, including community organizations from his neighbourhood, student organizations, disability rights groups, migrant justice groups, faith-based organizations, and human rights organizations such as Amnesty International. The demonstrators were acting in solidarity with the 1.5 million people of Gaza, demanding Israel end its military assault and lift the 18-month siege on the Gaza Strip to allow humanitarian aid into the territory. Protesters are outraged at Israel's latest assault on the Palestinian people and by the Canadian government's refusal to condemn these massacres that have left 700 dead and over 3000 wounded since December 27, 2008. In the past 24 hours Israeli has bombarded three U.N. schools in Gaza killing dozens of internally displaced refugees inside Gaza. "Canada's lack of response to recent war crimes in Gaza speaks volumes about their support for Israeli apartheid," said Sophie Schoen, a spokesperson for the action. "The Conservative government should expel all Israeli Consular officials from Canada, as other countries have done," said Amanda Dorter. "Until Ottawa ends its support for Israel we will continue to disrupt the workings of Israeli-Canadian cooperation." "We demand the Canadian government cut all ties with the apartheid regime of Israel," said Mostafa Henaway. The action in Montreal comes on the heels of countless protests worldwide against Israeli war crimes, including an occupation of the Israeli Consulate in Toronto by Jewish women yesterday. ? It is US-made weapons, missiles and bombs that are being used to terrorize and massacre the civilian population of Gaza. We also join, with demonstrators across the Middle East, to denounce the role of the Egyptian regime (the #2 recipient of US military aid), in providing political cover to the Israeli attack on Gaza, as well as refusing to open the Rafah crossing to Palestinians. We demand free movement and open borders, and are inspired by the actions of ordinary Gazans who last year, with their own hands, broke the Israeli siege and temporarily tore down the wall at the Gaza-Egypt border. We denounce the complicity of the Canadian government, including Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon, who have consistently defended Israel's war crimes, whether against civilians in Lebanon or Palestine. Importantly, while we march as part of a "Quebec in solidarity with Gaza" demonstration, we note the complicity of the Quebec government with Israeli apartheid, via the Quebec-Israel bilateral trade accord that was signed in the fall of 2008. In contrast, we support the calls by Palestinian civil society for a comprehensive boycott, divestment and sanctions campaign against apartheid Israel. *Organized and endorsed by: Block the Empire-Montreal, Q-Team, Solidarity Across Borders, Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights (SPHR), Tadamon and others.* To endorse the contingent, please e-mail: blocktheempire at gmail.com Contact: 514-848-7583 - www.iawmontreal.org *:::::::::::::::::::: ::::::::::::::::::::* *[The following is the text of the flyer to be distributed at the demonstration on Saturday in Montreal.]* *Solidarity with the people of Gaza! Oppose the war crimes of Israel! Denounce the complicity of Canada, the United States & Egypt* Our anti-apartheid bloc today joins with voices throughout the world -- from Sydney to Cairo, from Beirut to Montreal -- in screaming our solidarity with the people of the Gaza Ghetto, and denouncing the war crimes of the Israeli state against a civilian population. But, we also demonstrate to denounce the complicity of both Western and Arab governments in allowing this attack to happen and continue. Israel's crimes against the people of Gaza, and ongoing illegal occupation of Palestine, has been enabled by the active support and complicity of the United States government, as well as the political complicity of countries like Canada and the European Union. The United States, Canada, Egypt and others, through word and deed, are essentially partners to Israel's attacks. Today, in addition to denouncing *Ehud Olmert, Tzipi Livni, Ehud Barak* and the other Israeli politicians and officers who are the perpetrators of war crimes, we will also throw shoes against other political leaders who are complicit in the ongoing carnage in the Gaza Ghetto, including: *-- George Bush, Barack Obama and the US Government:* Both men are unapologetic supporters of Israel. While George Bush has already justly had shoes thrown at him (and deserves more), Barack Obama's silence in the face of hundreds of civilian deaths is nothing short of moral cowardice. Obama's presidential campaign actually took him to Sderot, Israel, where his speech mimicked the political justifications used today for Israel's attack. Obama and the Democractic Party (including his incoming Secretary of State Hillary Clinton) are extreme apologists for Israel, and might arguably be more pro-Israel than George Bush. *-- Stephen Harper, Lawrence Cannon and the Canadian government:* The Harper government again, as with their support of the Israeli attack on Lebanon in 2006, is shameless in its groveling support for Israel. Prime Minister Harper and Foreign Minister Cannon have openly justified Israel's attacks. As with the previous attack on Lebanese civilians, the Harper government considers Israeli attacks on Palestinian civilians to be justified and measured. There is not even a minimum of nuance in their support of Israel. The Quebec government is also complicit with Israeli apartheid, in signing the recent Quebec-Israel bilateral trade agreement. *-- Hosni Mubarak, Abu al-Gheit and the Egyptian regime:* As protests throughout the Middle East have emphasized, the Egyptian dictatorship (the #2 recipient of American military aid after Israel) has played a crucial role in providing political cover for the Israeli attack. Foreign Ministers Abu al-Gheit and Tzipi Livni met in Cairo less than 48 hours before the attacks began, and the Mubarak regime provided a seeming green light for the attack. The Egyptian regime's refusal to open the Gaza-Egypt border and to allow free movement for Gaza's residents means they are actively contributing to the destruction in Gaza. In contrast to the criminality and complicity of so-called leaders from Israel to Canada, from the United States to Egypt, we stand in solidarity with grassroots Palestinians who resist to survive, and to assert their basic dignity. We also re-iterate our support for a comprehensive boycott, divestment and sanctions campaign against the apartheid Israeli state. *Viva Viva Intifada!* * Endorsed by: Block the Empire-Montreal, Q-Team, Solidarity Across Borders, Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights (SPHR), Tadamon and others. The gathering brought together dozens of grassroots activists, elders, youth, women and men from Indigenous communities across "Canada" who are in active struggle to defend their land and assert self-determination. A new grassroots Indigenous network was created from the gathering, entitled the "Turtle Island Defenders of the Earth" (TIDE). On this special edition of No One Is Illegal Radio (December 2008), we hear from participants at the Defenders of the Land gathering.
