Rewind September 18th to 30th Vernissage / Opening:? September 19th, 7 pm MFA Gallery:? 1395 Ren? L?vesque West, Montreal Photo/video exhibition on Haiti ? A new exhibition by Montreal artist, photographer and Citizenshift contributor Darren Ell is set to open on September 18th.? Ell's exhibition, Haiti: Rewind, was created as a response to Canadian, French and U.S. policy in Haiti and comprises material drawn from Ell's visits to Haiti between 2006 and 2008.? The photo exhibition exposes the role of these three powers in the destabilization and subsequent overthrow of the popular government of Jean-Bertrand Aristide in February 2004. The photo exhibition looks at the consequences of the overthrow of the elected government, an event with which the Haitian people are living to this day. It questions the purported benevolence of the United Nations force that has been the predominant power in Haiti since 2004. ? The photographs and video installations of the exhibition place current foreign meddling in Haiti squarely within colonial history. Photographs taken in Port-au-Prince during UN police raids and popular demonstrations against rising prices harken back to French painters working at the height of French imperial power in Haiti in the late 1700's and to activist American painter Leon Golub. ? The first video installation features a serene but abandoned landscape with a voice-over by Haitian-Canadian Jean St-Vil reading Frantz Gabriel's eye-witness account of the abduction of Jean-Bertrand Aristide on February 29th, 2004. Gabriel was responsible for Aristide's security and was abducted himself. ? The second video installation is a looping projection, of legal data concerning the hundreds of political prisoners still detained in Haiti. The information for this piece was obtained from Haiti's Bureau des avocats internationaux (Office of International Lawyers). ? Haiti : Rewind is the third body of work for Darren Ell.? Twice Removed (2004) dealt with the Israeli occupation of Palestine; Between States (2006) addressed the treatment of refugee claimants in Canada.? Haiti : Rewind opens on Thursday, September 18th at Concordia University's MFA Gallery. The gallery is located at 1395 Boulevard Ren? L?vesque West and is open from 9am to 9pm, Monday to Saturday. A vernissage (opening party) will take place on Friday, September 19th at 7 pm. For more info, contact Darren: 514-992-8908. == Darren Ell Haiti:? :::::::::::::::::::: :::::::::::::::::::: 1000 x $5: A Montreal Fundraising Campaign in support of the Tyendinaga Legal Defence Fund To all indigenous sovereignty supporters in the Montreal-area -- A call for your support: Looking for up to 1000 individuals to donate $5 in support of the Tyendinaga Legal Defence Fund This coming January 2009, Mohawk organizer Shawn Brant will be on trial. If convicted by Canada's colonial courts, the Crown prosecutor is asking for 12 years in prison. Shawn faces trial and imprisonment for his involvement in defending the sovereignty and self-determination of the Mohawks of Tyendinaga, in eastern Ontario. The legal system's attack on Shawn occurs in the context of blockades and actions to bring to public attention the longstanding demands for justice in indigenous communities: unresolved land claims, poverty, suicide, and polluted water. In particular, the Mohawks of Tyendinaga are demanding the return of the Culbertson Tract, where they have reclaimed a quarry and maintain a full-time presence on site. The Culbertson Tract is a piece of land the government has long acknowledged was taken illegally from the Mohawks. One tangible and important form of support is to donate to the Tyendinaga Legal Defence Fund, which splits funds raised between legal costs and maintaining the quarry. We are calling on local groups to ask their members to donate $5 in support of indigenous sovereignty and self-determination. We have set a goal of trying to collect $5000 by November 30, 2008, $5 at-a-time. Larger donations won't be turned away, but we still would like to reach at least 1000 individuals in the Montreal-area, as a way of raising awareness about this important issue. Please take the time to read our flyer ( http://nooneisillegal-montreal.blogspot.com/2008/09/supporttyendinaga.html), or visit the website, to get acquainted with the issues. There are three ways you can contribute to the $5 x 1000 Montreal Fundraising Campaign: 1. Contact the Montreal Tyendinaga Support Committee directly ? indigenoussolidaritymontreal at gmail.com or 514-848-7583 ? to arrange to make a donation. 2. Organize a collection of $5 each from individuals within your group or network at your next meeting, or at an event. When collecting $5, please be sure to acquaint people with issues surrounding the court attack on Shawn Brant. After you have collected the money, please contact the Montreal Tyendinaga Support Committee directly to pass on the money and information about how many people donated (again, we'd like to raise $5000, $5 at-a-time). 3. Visit any one of the eight donation drop-off sites below, and make your donation (at the same time, pick up an information flyer). Through an analysis of some of Quebec's past riots, we will see what are the actual characteristics of a riot, beyond the stereotypes. What are the factors leading to a riot? Who takes part? Are there particular characteristics of riots? Can we associate a precise political ideology with riots? To what extent are they strategic? Part one in a series to oppose Canadian complicity in torture --> Photos of the Montreal action can be seen here: http://photos.cmaq.net/v/AbdelrazikTortureCanada1/* *--> A rally in support of Abdelrazik was also held in Ottawa. The video can be watched at http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=nHUpScbXBdk.* It is a sign that things are not as bad as they could be that the sight of three people being tortured in the middle of a busy sidewalk still has the power to check the pace of pedestrians in downtown Montreal. As people rounded the corner of Peel and Ste-Catherine on their lunch breaks, they almost stumbled over the prostrate bodies: blind-folded, hands bound behind their backs, forced into unnatural poses with tires and chains. While some averted their eyes and quickened their pace and a few hurled racist insults, many paused to take a tract calling for the immediate repatriation of Abousfian Abdelrazik and an end to Canadian complicity in torture. A poster hanging above the victims offered passers-by the opportunity to donate to a fund to pay for Abousfian Abdelrazik's plane ticket home to Montreal. Yet another Maher Arar case, Mr. Abdelrazik is stuck in Sudan, where he was detained and tortured on and off for years, with the knowledge and complicity of Canadian authorities. Finally released without charge, Abdelrazik found that there was no coming home: airline companies refused him and the Canadian consulate seemingly could not secure his passage. The situation became more stark late Thursday evening. The Globe and Mail revealed that a flight had been booked for Abdelrazik to come home this Monday but, despite an urgent request from his lawyer Yavar Hameed in August, the government had failed to issue the travel document he would need to board the flight. (Read full Globe article: www.peoplescommission.org/files/abousfianMedia/OttawaWithholdingTravelPapers.pdf.) In fact, until the Globe contacted them on Thursday, Canadian consular officials had not even responded to Hameed's urgent message. Within hours of the Globe's call, Canadian officials sent a fax, citing as the reason for their hesitation UN-imposed sanctions on financial assistance, including paying airfare, to people on the UN resolution 1267 blacklist. Hence the public collection in Montreal. In an official memo dated 30 July 2004, obtained under the Privacy Act, a Canadian official described how Abdelrazik's former wife was thinking of hiring a private charter to bring him back to Canada. The Foreign Affairs official concluded, "So, should she get a private plane, there is very little we could do to stop him from entering Canada. He would need an EP [travel document] and I guess this could be refused but on what ground." It seems the grounds have now been found. *--> **Links to news coverage of the public actions: www.peoplescommission.org/abdelrazik.php* *--> **To keep on top of developments, to find out whether Abelrazik will be allowed to fly home on Monday (tomorrow) and, if not, what you can do: www.peoplescommission.org/abdelrazik.php.* The torture techniques used in the Montreal action were based on drawings by Abdullah Almalki of how he was tortured in Syria and Egypt. The Iacobucci Inquiry into the role of Canadian authorities in his detention and torture and that of fellow Canadians Ahmad El Maati and Muayyed Nureddin will be released by 20 October 2008. Yesterday's action was one of a series of creative actions being organized in Montreal throughout the fall of 2008 to expose Canadian complicity in torture in the name of the so-called "war on terror". Inspired by the People's Commission on Immigration "Security" Measures, each action will focus on a different case of Canada's current involvement in torture. >From Omar Khadr in Guantanamo Bay to Ivan Apaolaza Sancho, who has been held at RDP prison in Montreal for over a year and threatened with deportation on the basis of information obtained under torture, to Hassan Almrei, a security certificate victim in Ontario who has been detained without charge for almost seven years under threat of being deported to face torture in Syria, Canadian officials are involved in torture. This is part of a dangerous trend to deny certain people their most fundamental human rights, ironically, in the name of "security" and even "civilization". Public ignorance, political exclusion and racism have allowed this to continue for far too long. Free & welcome to all! UPCOMING PRESENTATIONS: MONDAY, September 29 at 7pm The Mysterious Riot Quebec City 1917, Quebec City 2001, Montreal-Nord 2008 ? Riots have always frightened the ruling classes. The dominant ideologues have tried to discredit riots by all means at their disposal. Riots are supposedly 'irrational', 'violent', and a product of the 'rabble', 'troublemakers' and 'rock-throwers'. Together, we will try to understand a bit better this form of rebellion. Presented by Marc-Andr? Cyr, anarchist activist. Monday, OCTOBER 6 at 7pm Status for Kader!: Over 1,000 days in sanctuary Abdelkader Belaouni (Kader), a non-status Algerian man, has been in sanctuary at Saint Gabriel's Church since January 1, 2006 in order to avoid an unjust deportation order. Kader's story is representative of migration in the 21st century. He has struggled against dehumanizing bureaucracy to be treated with dignity and respect; he has inspired abroad network of support and resistance; and he has refused to be crushed by two and a half years of imprisonment. This workshop will look at his struggle and the various aspects and tactics of his campaign for status. Presented by members of the Committee to Support Abdelkader Belaouni info: www.soutienpourkader.net Monday, OCTOBER 20 at 7pm An Introduction to Participatory Economics What would a post-capitalist economy look like? How would we manage our resources and needs consistent with principles of equality and justice, while at the same time being free and efficient? Participatory economics is perhaps a step towards a response. This idea puts forward a third economic model which tries to move beyond classic liberal and Marxist models. This workshop will provide an introduction to this model followed by a discussion on the topic. Presented by Anna Kruzynski and Pascal Lebrun, members of La Pointe Libertaire. Monday, NOVEMBER 3 at 7pm Ecological struggles in Quebec; how to be radical and effective Yes, you're probably aware already, throughout the world, the environmental situation is alarming. While various groups rise up to try to stop the disaster and repair the damage, others hide behind "sustainable development" to mask their damage to the environment. Quebec is not an exception and the struggles here are numerous: from forests to waste management, from water quality to food security, from mega natural gas projects to uranium mining, and much more. What would we say by way of an assessment about the environmental and ecological problems in this corner of the Earth on which we live? And, if we feel like it, why not add an eco-feminist and anti-colonial analysis? A participatory presentation by Maude Prud'homme, member of the Independent Media Center in Montreal, the R?seau qu?b?cois des groupes ?cologistes (RQGE), and an ecofeminist activist. Monday, NOVEMBER 17 at 7pm Diverse experiences of autonomous social centres In this workshop we will address the diverse experiences of autonomous social centers. What is an autonomous social center ? How do they operate ? What are the issues and reasons for their evictions. Some of the experiences we'll share are based in Europe: the 400 Couverts Squat in Grenoble and the Tanneries Squat in Dijon; in Canada: the Frances Street Squat in Vancouver and the Pope Squat in Toronto; and here in Quebec: the Chevroti?re Squat in Quebec City and the Overdale-Prefontaine Squat in Montreal. We will end the workshop with a presentation on the Autonomous Social Center in Point-St-Charles. Presented by Nancy Breault & Pascal Lebrun, who are involved in the installation committee of the Autonomous Social Center, and some invited guests. Monday, DECEMBER 1st at 7pm Resistance 2010!: The links between the G8, SPP, the Olympics and local struggles What are the links between the G8, the North American Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP) and the upcoming 2010 Olympics? How are these issues linked to our local struggles for justice, dignity and self-determination. This multi-media presentation ? including photos and videos -- will look back at recent movements of contestation against the G8 (Genoa, Kananaskis/Ottawa) and SPP (Montebello), and at current resistance to the Olympics in "British Columbia". Looking ahead to 2010, when all three events will take place in Canada, this presentation will provide a basic framework to discuss and debate about how to mobilize against these manifestations of capitalist and colonial power and oppression, linked to our tangible local campaigns and projects. The film is filmed almost entirely in a verite style, presented without narration and with little explanation, focusing on ordinary Palestinians rather than politicians and pundits. More observation than political argument, GAZA STRIP offers a rare look inside the stark realities of Palestinian life and death under Israeli military occupation. ::: "Our Terrain of Struggle: Migrant Justice Organizing and Resistance in Montreal" ::: A photo exhibit documenting the organizing of Solidarity Across Borders (SAB) and allied groups will be displayed at various locations in Montreal this fall and winter. The exhibit is comprised of 24 medium-sized photographs, mounted on 12 black frames, with descriptive captions. The exhibit is also accompanied by silhouettes representing Montreal migrants who have resisted removal in the past several years. The photos are a partial and incomplete glimpse into the diverse organizing that constitutes migrant justice struggle in Montreal. ::: Photo Displays - Snap! Moving to Our Own Beats ::: *Snap! Moving to Our Own Beats (a QPIRG Concordia working group) will be displaying photos of the t-shirt images created by Snap! participants. Participants from Coviq Youth Centre, Jeunesse Deux Milles, Intertribal Youth Council and other youth designed their own t-shirt images and learned the silkscreening process from start to finish. Presented by Anna Kruzynski and Pascal Lebrun, members of La Pointe Libertaire. www.lapointelibertaire.org Monday, NOVEMBER 3 at 7pm Ecological struggles in Quebec; how to be radical and effective Yes, you're probably aware already, throughout the world, the environmental situation is alarming. Presented by Nancy Breault & Pascal Lebrun, who are involved in the installation committee of the Autonomous Social Center, and some invited guests. http://www.centresocialautogere.org Monday, DECEMBER 1st at 7pm Resistance 2010!: The links between the G8, SPP, the Olympics and local struggles What are the links between the G8, the North American Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP) and the upcoming 2010 Olympics? How are these issues linked to our local struggles for justice, dignity and self-determination. This multi-media presentation ? including photos and videos -- will look back at recent movements of contestation against the G8 (Genoa, Kananaskis/Ottawa) and SPP (Montebello), and at current resistance to the Olympics in "British Columbia". Looking ahead to 2010, when all three events will take place in Canada, this presentation will provide a basic framework to discuss and debate about how to mobilize against these manifestations of capitalist and colonial power and oppression, linked to our tangible local campaigns and projects.
