According to Ofelia: *"Migration is a natural-occurring thing. People have migrated all over this land since the creation of this world. No fence is going to stop that."* (Interview linked at: http://nooneisillegal-montreal.blogspot.com/2007/12/no-one-is-illegal-radio-december-2007.html) This month, we hear from three more voices of resistance to the US-Mexico Border Wall, and in support of migrants. BRENDA NORRELL, based in Tuscon, Arizona, publishes the Censored Blog which reports on under-reported news about Indigenous Peoples, border injustice and international human rights. Brenda has been a reporter in "Indian country" for 25 years, living for 18 years on the Navajo Nation and working as a staffer for the Navajo Times. In this interview, she addresses the various movements against the border in 2007, describes the impacts of the border fence being built in southern Arizona, and recalls the Indigenous Border Summit. MIKE WILSON, currently based in Tuscon, is an indigenous O'odham. He is a humanitarian worker who, in defiance of the Tohono O'odham tribal government, leaves water and maintains water stations for migrants moving north across the border. Every year, an average of 75 migrants die on O'odham lands in southern Arizona, usually from dehydration and exposure in the treacherous desert. In this interview, Mike describes his humanitarian work, the deaths of migrants on O'odham land, and the complicity of the tribal government with the Department of Homeland Security. JAY JOHNSON-CASTRO, based in Del Rio, Texas, is a member of Border Ambassadors. In 2006, he marched more than 200 miles between Laredo and Brownsville, in opposition to the Border Wall. As part of Freedom Ambassadors, Jay has also been active in opposing the Hutto Detention Center in Taylor, Texas, where children are detained in a private prison facility. In this interview, Jay speaks about the community at the Texas-Mexico border that is being divided by the Border Wall, as well as the conditions in migrant detention facilities, including the detention center in Raymondville, which has been described as "the largest concentration camp in the world". Background: -> Censored Blog: www.bsnorrell.blogspot.com -> Humane Borders: www.humaneborders.org -> Map of deaths on Arizona-Mexico border (2000-2004): www.humaneborders.org/news/images/migrantdeaths_0004.jpg -> Border Ambassadors: www.borderambassadors.com -> Freedom Ambassadors: www.freedomambassadors.com -> Photos of Raymondville and Hutto detention centers: www.subtopia.blogspot.com/2007/02/circus-of-detention.html * ::: "Smuggling, trafficking and open borders"* On this month's show, we also hear from NANDITA SHARMA, an activist and scholar currently based in Hawaii. Nandita helped to organize the "Open the Borders" conference in 2002, and is the author of "Home Economics: Nationalism and the Making of "Migrant Workers" in Canada". In Part 1 of the interview, Nandita takes a critical look at smuggling and trafficking. In her words:* "The Canadian government's legislation against smuggling and trafficking is the height of hyprocrisy. The main consequence of anti-smuggling and anti-trafficking legislation is to make the lives of migrants more vulnerable and their journeys more precarious. Traffickers are not the main problem that migrants face; the main problem that the vast majority of the world's migrants face is restrictive immigration policies. Anti-trafficking campaigns are the moral regulatory arm of contemporary anti-immigrant politics."* In Part 2, Nandita addresses the themes of her book, "Home Economics", including rejecting global apartheid, and her critique of appeals to citizenship and nation-states in migrant justice work. In her words: *"[I add] my voice to the growing social movement for a world without borders, a world where people have the ability both to "stay" and to "move" according to their own self-determined needs and desires, a world where no one is made homeless."* Background: -> Anti-Trafficking Rhetoric and the Making of Global Apartheid: http://muse.jhu.edu/journals/nwsa_journal/v017/17.3sharma.html -> Organizing for Migrant Justice and Self-Determination: http://www.leftturn.org/?q=node/842 LISTEN to the January 2008 edition of No One Is Illegal Radio at: http://www.radio4all.net/proginfo.php?id=26108 No One Is Illegal Radio broadcasts live on the first Thursday of every month, from 5-6pm (EST), as part of "Off the Hour", produced in collaboration with the community news collective at CKUT. In the spirit of resistance to colonialism, with the 2010 Olympics as a main target, Kanahus Pellkey of the Native Youth Movement and native youth Dustin Johnson are touring throughout the Great Lakes and East Coast in January and February 2008. "By them choosing to have the Olympics here, it's opening up our land, our sacred sites, our medicine grounds," says Kanahus Pellkey. "We want investors to know our land is not for sale." Pre-Olympic fever occupies the province of BC, and the economic excitement has massively accelerated gentrification and the building of highways, resorts, and condos. The construction of infrastructure for the 2010 Olympics itself is adding to extensive destruction of traditional homelands of the local Indigenous peoples. In October 2007, more than 1500 Indigenous people representing communities across this hemisphere held the Gathering of the Indigenous Peoples of America, on Yaqui territory in Vicam, Sonora, Mexico. They stated in their final declaration, "We reject the 2010 Winter Olympics on sacred and stolen territory of Turtle Island?Vancouver, Canada." This speaking tour is strengthened by this momentum, and by the knowledge that hundreds, if not thousands of Indigenous people now plan to attend the Olympic Games, not in celebration, but in resistance to the danger the Olympics poses to Indigenous lands, identity, culture, health, livelihoods, and to future generations. The Native Youth Movement works to revive traditional knowledge and inspire Native youth to defend their Peoples and Territories. Kanahus Pellkey is a Secwepemc and Ktnuxa Warrior and a spokesperson for the Secwepemc chapter of the NYM. She has been jailed before for fighting against the illegal occupation and theft of Secwepemc Lands for the Sun Peaks ski-resort, and is active in opposing the 2010 Olympics. Dustin Johnson is a member of the Ts'mksiyen nation and is active in organizing anti-colonial resistance to the 2010 Olympics. ABOUT THE 2010 OLYMPICS The Olympic organizers operate with a budget of almost $2 billion, and other costs to government surpass $6 billion. Despite all the Olympic-related mega development, Vancouver is now home to North America's fastest growing homelessness crisis. Indigenous people account for 30% of this homeless population, despite making up only 2% of the total population in the province. Dozens of low-income hotels and apartment buildings are being converted to unaffordable condominiums. As thousands of people are forced from their homes, they are then criminalized for being homeless. Private security firms are hired by the city to further police the streets, long-running squats are shut down, and social services are more stressed and threatened than ever. The solution of the municipal and provincial governments and the police is to ignore the root cause, and instead pay people to leave Vancouver and repress those who stay. The darker side of the 2010 Olympics is further apparent by examining how their sponsors and supporters are some of the most destructive companies on Turtle Island. These include: ? Petro-Canada, one of Canada's largest producers of oil and gas, ? TransCanada, one of the continent's largest transporters of oil and gas, ? Canadian Pacific Railway, long an integral tool of colonization, ? Hudson's Bay Company, another company responsible for the colonization and theft of Indigenous land, ? General Electric, one of the world's top three producers of military aircraft engines and major producer of nuclear power plants, ? General Motors, long a top contractor for the Canadian military and now the world's largest automobile manufacturer, ? Dow Chemical, the world's second largest chemical manufacturer and cause of the Bhopal, India disaster, ? Bell Canada, who's CEO is one of the top corporate architects of the Security and Prosperity Partnership. There is of course so much more that could be said. Mr. Rishmawi is the founder of the International Middle East Media Center (IMEMC) and co-founder of the International Solidarity Movement. He will discuss the establishment and work of the IMEMC, focusing on untold news stories such as non-violent resistance, which are rarely mentioned in most media about the region. The IMEMC is a media center developed in collaboration between Palestinian and international journalists to provide independent English language media coverage of Israel-Palestine. Over the last several years, the IMEMC has distributed daily and weekly updates, offering on the ground coverage of the occupation. As a joint Palestinian-International effort, the IMEMC combines Palestinian journalists' deep understanding of the history and the socio-political context with International journalists' independent reporting skills. Mr. Rishmawi's lecture will address covering a more personal side of conflict while developing a media center devoted to bringing independent journalists to Palestine. He will also present a few short video clips produced by the IMEMC. Since 2005, CKUT Radio in Montreal has worked in conjunction with the IMEMC to send CKUT producers and university students from the Montreal area to intern in Palestine. During this time, interns have filed reports on Palestinians living under apartheid rule in Israel and produced stories on the situation of Palestinians enduring the Israeli military occupation of Palestine. Interns have produced interviews, documentaries, and aided with the IMEMC's daily and weekly updates - all of which have aired on campus and community radio stations across Canada. One former intern, Seth Porcello, a McGill student and CKUT producer, received the 2007 National Campus Community Radio Association's Award for Documentary Entry. His piece, titled "The Shouting Mountain," is an audio portrait of the border between the occupied Golan Heights and Syria illustrated by field recordings from the area. Seth will join Mr. Rishmawi during this tour to present about the opportunities that exist at the IMEMC for university students and the general public. *Information* International Middle East Media Center - http://www.imemc.org Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights - http://www.sphr.org -30- From mfoster at web.net Wed Jan 9 15:17:14 2008 From: mfoster at web.net (Mary Foster) Date: Wed, 9 Jan 2008 18:17:14 -0500 Subject: [Bloquez l'empire!] Cda's RADARSAT satellite sold to "weapons & space" giant ATK Message-ID: <1a1101c85316$d5e994a0$6405a8c0@Yoodle> > Please link to and > circulate this article > > MAJIIC Wars: > Canada's RADARSAT satellite company sold to "weapons & space" giant, ATK > By Richard Sanders, Editor, Press for Conversion! > > The news today (January 9, 2008) is that a Canadian company, called > MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates (MDA), will sell off its space > divisions to the US war industry giant, called Alliant Techsystems (ATK). > > Just a few weeks ago (December 14, 2007), the world's most advanced > "synthetic aperture radar" satellite, a Canadian invention called > RADARSAT-2, was finally blasted into space. > > There is a major connection between these two stories. > > MDA has been the proud owner and controller of RADARSAT-2, since the > Government of Canada generously handed this publicly-funded satellite > over to them. Impressions from Nahr el-Bared: Displaced Refugees A Photo Essay from Mary Ellen Davis. http://tadamon.resist.ca/index.php/post/1101 Nahr el-Bared, a Palestinian refugee camp located on the Mediterranean coast of Lebanon, near Tripoli, was the setting of massive violence in the conflict between the Lebanese army and the armed faction of Fatah al-Islam, which lasted from the 20th of May to the 4th of September. This conflict ultimately forced 40,000 of the camps' residents to evacuate against their will. Today, nothing but rubbles remain, the most part of which are inhabitable. During the month of December 2007, the rear of the camp remained under military occupation and was inaccessible for inhabitants, despite the ceasefire on September 4th. From a distance, one can see only debris left. These photographs were taken discreetly, for authorities have discouraged any press coverage of the camp. In the new camp area, reconstruction has begun, but many of the buildings must first be demolished. ---- From tadamon at resist.ca Tue Jan 15 18:45:47 2008 From: tadamon at resist.ca (Tadamon!) End CSIS criminalization, profiling and harassment of refugees and immigrants! Thursday, 31 January, 12:15pm Rally in front of the Supreme Court (301 Wellington Street), Ottawa **Reserve your seat on bus from Montreal now (details below)!** Rally flyers: Just as it was recently discovered that the CIA destroyed records, it was revealed in 2005 that CSIS destroyed evidence in the file of security certificate detainee Adil Charkaoui. On January 31st, Charkaoui will be challenging the legality of the destruction of evidence in his file by CSIS at the Supreme Court. The case will expose some of the weakness of the "evidence" CSIS uses in security certificate and similar cases: hearsay, rumours, unproven information from foreign spy agencies, and information obtained under torture. This information can be as tenuous as CSIS assessments of foreign intelligence agencies assessments of informers' unconfirmed allegations. On the basis of such flimsy - and secret - information, immigrants can and have been refused entry to Canada, kept in legal limbo for decades ("security delayed"), put under surveillance, held under house arrest, imprisoned, deported, and even handed over to torture. If it passes, Bill C-3, the "new" security certificate law, will continue to allow the government to use such information to justify indefinite detention, house arrest and deportation to torture. This information will still be withheld from the detainee, the detainee's lawyer, and the public, while CSIS will not be obligated to disclose all of its file even to the judge. In other words, C-3 will provide legal cover for CSIS to continue racial profiling and other abusive behaviours with impunity. Join us on 31 January to denounce the actions of CSIS and its role in the criminalization, racial profiling and harassment of immigrants and targeted communities. Message-ID: ISRAELI APARTHEID WEEK MONTREAL 60 Years of Nakba: End Israeli Apartheid http://tadamon.resist.ca/index.php/post/1114 Cities across Canada and around the world are participating in a global week of action against Israeli apartheid from 3 to 10 February. Israeli Apartheid Week, initiated at the grassroots level in Palestine, is now in its fourth consecutive year. In 2008, Israeli Apartheid Week occurs during the 60th year of the Palestinian Nakba ("catastrophe")-- 60 years of dispossession, ethnic cleansing and exile for Palestinians resulting from the creation of the state of Israel. Israel is now taking its place in the global conscience, alongside other settler-colonial states like South Africa, as an apartheid state, and not only a belligerent occupying power. Prominent Palestinians, Israeli anti-Zionists, and South Africans have been at the forefront of efforts to expose the apartheid nature of the state of Israel. At the same time, an international campaign of boycotts, divestment and sanctions against Israeli apartheid, as called for by over 170 Palestinian grassroots and civil society organizations in July 2005, is gaining momentum globally, day by day. Israeli Apartheid Week promotes the strategy of boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israeli apartheid to support the demands of the July 2005 grassroots appeal: full equality for Arab citizens of Israel; an end to the occupation and colonization of the West Bank and Gaza; and the implementation of the right of return and compensation for Palestinian refugees pursuant to UN resolution 194. Responding to a call from the Coalition against Israeli Aparthied in Toronto, Tadamon is participating in Anti-Apartheid Week on the understanding of Israel as an apartheid state, with a commitment to the Palestinian right of return, in opposition to all forms of racism, and in solidarity with oppressed people across the globe. In North America (Turtle Island), Tadamon recognizes the central importance of solidarity with the indigenous people of the continent, a continuing anti-colonial struggle with a clear political parallel to the struggle against Israeli apartheid. Join us in making 2008 a year of resistance to Israeli apartheid. The refugees will return! Apartheid will fall! ----------- Tadamon! Syndicale ?tudiante (ASS?) ---- BACKGROUND: Israeli Apartheid Week and the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign Israel is now taking its place in the global conscience, alongside other settler-colonial states like South Africa, as an apartheid state, and not only a belligerent occupying power. Gaza is under siege. Israel is imposing collective punishment on the 1.5 million Palestinians of Gaza, who continue to face chronic shortages of electricity, fuel, food and basic necessities in the context of an ongoing campaign of military violence executed by the apartheid state of Israel. Israel's sanctions, unilaterally imposed on Gaza, are enforced through an illegal military occupation, that in recent months has lead to the total closure of all entry and exit points into Gaza. UN officials recently observed that the "situation has deteriorated into a full-fledged emergency because of the cutoff of vital supplies for Palestinians." As a result of Israeli actions, Gaza has become a giant prison. In the early morning hours on Wednesday, January 23rd, the Palestinian people illustrated a spirit of resistance to the world, destroying the border wall along the Egypt-Palestine border. In an act of popular resistance hundreds-of-thousands of Palestinians opened the Egypt-Palestine border, illustrating to the world the dire circumstances facing the people of Gaza, while breaking down a barrier of apartheid essential to the ongoing imprisonment of the Palestinian people. Although the wall has fallen, the Israeli siege continues. Meanwhile the Israeli army continues its military attacks on the imprisoned Palestinian people of Gaza, demolishing homes, factories and agricultural land and carrying out arrests. Fatal bombing raids continue, killing Palestinian men, women and children. Canada stands complicit in the ongoing campaign of starvation, military violence and terror directed at the people of Gaza. Canada's Conservative government has developed an international reputation as the most pro-Israeli government in the world, standing against Palestinian human rights and self-determination at all moments possible, within the United Nations and through the growing bilateral relations with the apartheid state of Israel. As the Canadian supported and Israeli imposed siege on the Gaza Strip continues it is essential for people internationally to support the growing international campaign of boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israeli apartheid to support the demands of the July 2005 grassroots appeal: full equality for Arab citizens of Israel; an end to the occupation and colonization of the West Bank and Gaza; and the implementation of the right of return and compensation for Palestinian refugees pursuant to UN resolution 194. * Organized by: Coalition for Justice & Peace in Palestine (CJPP) Syrian Students Association, Montreal.
