Ne manquez pas cet événement unique qui met en vedette le groupe de
Toronto LAL dans une performance en direct à l'occasion du lancement de
leur nouvel album Deportation. Par la même occasion, venez entendre
Kader B.B.B. & 23 (TU-THREE) dans leurs débuts musicaux avec des
extraits de leur album à venir, « No Human is an Island ». Avec également
Sam Shalabi (oud), et des images projetées par Jose Garcia.

::: A propos de LAL :::

La musique de LAL est le résultat de la collaboration entre la vocaliste
Rosina Kazi, le compositeur de musique électronique Nick Murray (alias «
Murr »), le bassiste Ian DeSouza et le percussionniste Rakesh Tewari.

« LAL est un groupe musical engagé qui représente l'Ouganda, le
Bangladesh, la Barbade et l'Inde, affirme le groupe. Notre nouvel album
« Deportation » sortira en mai 2008. Nous espérons que vous soutiendrez
l'art indépendant et que vous viendrez nous entendre! »

« Le nouvel album s'appelle « Deportation » et il fut créé et mis en
branle à la suite des effets du 11-Septembre, notamment la déportation
de Queen Nzinga [une artiste et activiste qui fut déportée au Costa Rica
de Toronto, le 8 mars 2004, journée Internationale des femmes] et de
plusieurs autres du Projet Threadbare [une campagne pour empêcher la
déportation de 24 pakistanais à cause des mesures racistes de
l'immigration et de la sécurité nationale], notre expérience en tant que
personnes migrantes, nos voyages, ceux et celles que nous avons
rencontré le long du chemin, nos pensées et nos espoirs en tant
qu'individus et membres de communautés. Nous sommes enchantés d'avoir
l'opportunité de faire de la musique qui parle des enjeux de justice
sociale. »

23 & Kader, deux immigrants arrivés au Canada, l'un des Etats-Unis,
l'autre d'Algérie, ont mis ensemble leur talent au début de l'année 2008
pour collaborer sur un concept musical qui traverse les frontières,
mélangeant Hip hop, Spoken Word, Downtempo et Raï dans une tapisserie
moderne aux accents gypsis! Ne manquez pas le lancement de leur album «
No Human is an Island », enregistré en sanctuaire à l'église St. Gabriel
à Pointe-Saint-Charles (Montréal).

::: Sam Shalabi, joueur de oud :::

Sam Shalabi est un acteur bien connu de la scène d'improvisation
musicale de Montréal. Membre fondateur du groupe Shalabi Effect, il fait
également partie de plusieurs autres groupes et a également réalisé
trois albums solo: "Luteness", "On Hashish" et "Osama", un album portant
sur l'arabophobie dans un monde "post-11 septembre". Son style musical
s'étend du rock psychédélique jusqu'aux performances abstraites. Bien
qu'étant surtout connu comme guitariste, Sam Shalabi joue également du
oud ainsi que plusieurs autres instruments.


::: A propos de Mayworks!/Mai à l'oeuvre:::

Festival portant sur les travailleurs-euses et des arts, Mayworks! est
un événement artistique multidisciplinaire célébrant les luttes
populaires de justice sociale et économique, contribuant à bâtir la
solidarité et la communauté autour de ces luttes. La fondation du
festival est la solidarité entre ouvrièr-e-s et artistes, qui partagent
entre eux une lutte commune visant des salaires décents, des conditions
de travail saines et une culture vivante.

Le but de Mayworks! est de promouvoir les intérêts des
travailleurs-euses culturel-le-s et des syndicalistes tout en accordant
une place centrale à la culture ouvrière, trop souvent marginalisée dans
les milieux culturels.

Fondé en 1986 par le Conseil syndical régional de Toronto/York,
Mayworks! est maintenant le festival ouvrier le plus important et le
plus répandu au Canada. Cependant, aucune édition du festival ne s'est
jamais réalisée au Québec avant cette année. Mayworks! Montréal fêtera
la culture ouvrière québécoise dans tout son dynamisme, mettant de l'avant les
réalités des ouvrièr-e-s immigrant-e-s, qui composent 45% de la
population montréalaise mais qui se voient souvent réléguées aux derniers
rangs du marché de travail parce que les institutions canadiennes
refusent de reconnaître leurs qualifications, professions et aptitudes.
Le premier Mayworks! à Montréal sera organisé à Côte-des-Neiges,
quartier ouvrier où viennent s'installer nombreux immigrant-e-s récent-e-s.

Mayworks! commémore la fête du Premier Mai, véritable fête du travail
qui depuis les années 1880 souligne la lutte ouvrière dans le monde entier.

::: A propos de Comité de soutien à Abdelkader Belaouni :::

Le 1er janvier 2006, voilà deux ans quatre mois déjà, Abdelkader
Belaouni (Kader), un homme d'origine algérienne réfugié et sans statut
au Canada, a pris refuge dans l'église St-Gabriel à Montréal afin
d'éviter la déportation du Canada. Malgré les nombreux appuis reçus, à
ce jour Kader demeure confiné à l'église dont il est à toutes fins
pratiques prisonnier, dans l'impossibilité de quitter les lieux sous
risque d'être arrêté et déporté. Sa lutte est semblable à celle de tant
d'autres réfugié-e-s et migrant-e-s au Canada et partout dans le monde,
déraciné-e-s, économiquement marginalisé-e-s, forcé-e-s de vivre dans la
précarité, à qui on refuse le droit de se créer une vie meilleure et
qu'on emprisonne sans scrupule ou qu'on menace de déportation.

LAL's music is the outcome of a collaboration between vocalist Rosina

nationalsecurity measures], our experiences as migrant peoples, our
travels, andthose we've met along the way, our thoughts & spirits as

::: Sam Shalabi on Oud :::

Shalabi is a central node in Montreal's free improv scene. Best known
as a founding member of Shalabi Effect, he is also part of a number of
bands, and has put out three solo albums: "Luteness", "On Hashish",
and of course "Osama", his investigation of arabophobia in a
'post-9-11 world'. His style ranges from freeform psychedelic rock to
the most oddball abstract performance. Although mostly known as a
guitarist, Shalabi also performs on oud and a variety of other
instruments.

A festival of working people and the arts, Mayworks! is a
multi-disciplinary arts festival that celebrates the building of
communities and people's struggles for social and economic justice.
Builton the remise that workers and artists share a common struggle for

goal is to promote the interests of cultural workers and trade unionists
and to bring working-class culture from the margins of cultural activity
onto Mayworks! is Canada's largest and oldest labour arts festival
(founded in1986 by the Toronto and York Region Labour Council); this is

:: About the Committee to Support Abdelkader Belaouni ::

On 1 January 2006, over two years and four months ago, Abelkader
Belaouni,or Kader, a non-status Algerian man, took refuge in St.
Gabriel's churchin Montreal to avoid deportation from Canada. Despite an
extensive outpouring of support, he has remained a prisoner in the
church ever since, unable to leave for fear of being arrested and
deported. Kader's struggle has brought to light the racism and ableism
(discrimination against people with disabilities) of Immigration Canada,
and mirrors the struggles of many other refugees and migrants in Canada
and around the world, who  are uprooted, denied the right to seek a life
of security and dignity, economically marginalized, forced to live in
precarity, imprisoned and threatened with deportation.
