The Canada Day demo follows from actions on Mohawk territories near Montreal on June 29. In the early morning, Highway 30, and then highway 138 was blocked. In Kahnesatake, it was reported that the main road from Oka to the reserve was blocked for most of the day. Kingston. =============== RCMP to open inquiry into leak of secret document in Charkaoui case Montreal, 3 July 2007 - The Coalition Justice for Adil Charkaoui is pleased by the government's decision to ask the RCMP to open inquiry into the leak of secret information in Charkaoui's file. The decision to ask the RCMP to open the investigation was announced in a letter received by Charkaoui's lawyers this past Friday. The letter also stated that an administrative inquiry would take place, along with an assessment of the impact of the incident on court proceedings. The Coalition demanded a police investigation into the source of the leak when the Montreal newspaper La Presse printed allegations from a secret document on 22 June. The Coalition is also calling for a public inquiry into the actions of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) in Charkaoui's case, and for the Minister to review and withdraw the certificate issued against Charkaoui without delay. "The leak didn't happen by accident. We want to know who leaked it, who confirmed the authenticity of the secret document and why. At the same time, this is not the first time that dirty tricks have been played. That is why we are now calling for a public inquiry into the actions of CSIS in Charkaoui's file," said Mary Foster, member of the Coalition Justice for Adil Charkaoui. "When it was revealed by the Journal de Montr?al in April that Ahmed Ressam retracted his allegations against Charkaoui, the Coalition, supported by civil liberties groups, community organizations and members of Parliament from all opposition parties, called for a fair and transparent review of Charkaoui's security certificate. The Coalition asked the Ministers responsible to withdraw the security certificate against Charkaoui, drop all the conditions against him and clear his name of all suspicions subsequent to that review. This latest abuse, which strongly recalls the leak of secret information to Ottawa Citizen reporter Juliet O'Neill in Maher Arar's case, and which comes after a long string of embarassments for the government in Charkaoui's unravelling file, makes the need for the Minister to take this step all the more apparent," added Foster. They are meeting at the Chateau Montebello, as part of the so-called "Security and Prosperity Partnership" (aka the "Three Amigos" Summit). They talk about "security" and "prosperity", but their agenda really means insecurity and misery for working and oppressed peoples in the Americas. In brief, the "Security and Prosperity Partnership" (SPP) combines the destructive neo-liberal policies of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with the fear and paranoia of post 9-11 "Homeland Security" policies. The SPP is firmly rooted within a colonial and capitalist framework. The SPP is described by its proponents as a "NAFTA 2.0", and is promoted and supported by corporations and their lobby groups, like the Canadian Council of Chief Executives. A group of 30 corporate executives from the NAFTA countries comprise the North American Competitiveness Council, which was set up "to fully incorporate the private sector into the SPP process" (to cite the SPP's own words). Moreover, because the SPP announces itself as a "dialogue based on shared values," it is secretive process, subject to no formal public scrutiny or open debate. This includes policies already in effect such as the expansion of temporary worker programs to exploit low paid labour, the arming of Canadian border agents in August 2007, the co-ordination of no-fly lists and the use of biometrics. These changes will increase the displacement of our Indigenous sisters and brothers across North America, increase the profiling and criminalizing that immigrants and refugees experience, worsen the conditions of immigrant, migrant and non-status workers and make the borders increasingly difficult to cross for the original peoples of these lands and those searching for a dignified existence. **In brief, the "Security and Prosperity Partnership" (SPP) combines the destructive neo-liberal policies of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with the fear and paranoia of post 9-11 "Homeland Security" policies. The SPP is firmly rooted within a colonial and capitalist framework. **Because the SPP announces itself as a "dialogue based on shared values," it is secretive process, subject to no formal public scrutiny or open debate. **The SPP reinforces the idea of "Fortress North America", whereby the rich and privileged live in gated communities and gentrified cities, protected by police and security, with easy movement for capital between borders; for the rest, there's border fences, detention centers, prisons, surveillance, and increased precarity. **Indigenous and migrant communities have entire histories of colonialism and resistance that have shown the dangers of such agreements between governments and companies -- agreements which have pushed them off our lands, forced them into poverty, forced them to migrate and yet controlled their movement. The powers behind the SPP's of today were the East India Company, the Hudson Bay Company and the Encomenderos of the past. En outre, le consul d'Isra?l accuse le Hezbollah de vouloir ?prendre le contr?le du Liban?. En r?alit?, les ?lus du Hezbollah (parti politique l?gitime au Liban, qui participe aux ?lections) se sont retir?s du gouvernement pour r?clamer davantage de repr?sentativit?. Depuis la fin 2006, ils n'ont donc plus aucun portefeuille minist?riel et ont rejoint l'opposition (compos?e d'une dizaine de partis) qui r?clame (pacifiquement) des changements politiques. La coalition rest?e au pouvoir, soutenue l? encore par les ?tats-Unis et les puissances occidentales, continue donc de diriger le pays. Dans les faits, bien que le Hezbollah soit en partie financ? par l'Iran, affirmer qu'il tente de ?prendre le contr?le du Liban? est totalement infond? (il n'y a eu ni coup d'?tat ni agression interne qui puisse ?tre attribu?e au Hezbollah dans cette bataille politique). Il est ?vident que l'Iran joue un r?le majeur dans la politique au Moyen-Orient. C'est un grand pays, une puissance r?gionale et, en effet, un r?gime contestable pour de nombreux aspects de ses politiques int?rieures et ext?rieures. The building collapsed under Israeli bombs, burying the people inside and killing many, including at least 16 children. Human Rights Watch denounced Israel's military action as a "war crime", noting a consistent failure on the part of Israel to distinguish between civilians and combatants in its 34-day assault on Lebanon last summer. Over ten years previously, Israel shelled Qana during the "Grapes of Wrath" military assault on Lebanon. In 1996, Israel hit a United Nations compound where an estimated 800 Lebanese civilians had taken refuge from the Israeli bombardment. Metallica Resources, a Canadian-owned mining company, is setting up a project to excavate an entire hillside in the town to withdraw resources from the earth. The town.s residents have been struggling hard against the project for many years now, but to little avail. I spoke with Fabian Duran, an independent media activist and film-maker who works with the Independent Media Center in Mexico City. Fabian traveled to San Pedro in early July of this year to speak with the villagers, miners, and other anti-mine activists in the town. Here he recounts some of the findings of his trip, including the environmental impacts of the mining project, the forced displacement of the villagers, and the corrupt dealings between Metallica resources and the former Vincente Fox government. This includes policies already in effect such as the expansion of temporary worker programs to exploit low paid labour, the arming of Canadian border agents in August 2007, the co-ordination of no-fly lists and the use of biometrics. These changes will increase the displacement of our Indigenous sisters and brothers across North America, increase the profiling and criminalizing that immigrants and refugees experience, worsen the conditions of immigrant, migrant and non-status workers and make the borders increasingly difficult to cross for the original peoples of these lands and those searching for a dignified existence. **In brief, the "Security and Prosperity Partnership" (SPP) combines the destructive neo-liberal policies of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with the fear and paranoia of post 9-11 "Homeland Security" policies. The SPP is firmly rooted within a colonial and capitalist framework. **Because the SPP announces itself as a "dialogue based on shared values," it is secretive process, subject to no formal public scrutiny or open debate. **The SPP reinforces the idea of "Fortress North America", whereby the rich and privileged live in gated communities and gentrified cities, protected by police and security, with easy movement for capital between borders; for the rest, there's border fences, detention centers, prisons, surveillance, and increased precarity. **Indigenous and migrant communities have entire histories of colonialism and resistance that have shown the dangers of such agreements between governments and companies -- agreements which have pushed them off our lands, forced them into poverty, forced them to migrate and yet controlled their movement. The powers behind the SPP's of today were the East India Company, the Hudson Bay Company and the Encomenderos of the past.
