Hey, a few weeks ago BLEM brought up a motion to oppose the Atlantica
deregulated trading zone, but not a lot of people were there. I checked out
the anti-Atlantica website (google 'stop atlantica') and the Pro Atlantica
lobby site. Here's the information package they send out to interested
parties. Consider it enemy propaganda, but know your enemy, and what they're
telling people. The PR war just started.

>Got Atlantica? Increased attention around concept highlights potential
>
>Atlantica was the talk of the media recently after a clumsy critique of the
>concept highlighted the opportunities that would arise from its
>implementation.
>
>Atlantica advocates have been busy fielding numerous calls as a result and
>the public is gaining awareness as to just how the transnational project
>will provide jobs, growth and self-sufficiency for the partners involved.
>
>A columnist in the NB newspaper, Times and Transcript, described criticism
>of Atlantica as having ".so many red-herrings and straw men that I don't
>know whether to cut bait or make hay."
>
>AIMS acting President Charles Cirtwill added "The recent media attention
>has
>debunked many myths about Atlantica. People who previously were somewhat in
>the dark on the benefits of Atlantica are now starting to get a better feel
>for the economic benefits to be derived."

>
>
>
>Dean Girdis, President of Downeast, underlines that Atlantica partnerships
>have produced many economic benefits and the LNG terminal will help
>continue
>this trend.
>
>
>
>He noted that much of the terminal's construction work could be done by New
>Brunswick companies. But for this to happen he says Canadian regulators
>must
>come to the table with an open mind.
>
>
>
>"And this issue is not about LNG anymore. It is about the right of innocent

>Powering Atlantica - Gordon Weil makes the case for single electricity
>market between Maine and New Brunswick
>
>
>
>The recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Maine and
>New Brunswick to design a plan for a single electricity market is a very
>positive step for Atlantica.
>
>
>
>This article by Maine based energy consultant Gordon Weil discusses the
>MOU,
>how it came to be and its potential for developing a single, cross-border
>electricity market. He says that the ability to overcome the traditional
>mindset and foster growth of a closer relationship is of historical
>significance.
>
>
>
>There are challenges and the partners will have to work closely to manage
>their mutual interests across an international border but the gain in
>establishing a functional market between the US northeast and Atlantic
>Canada is worth the effort.

>It's High Tide: Bay of Fundy tidal power project could add to Atlantica's
>energy advantage
>
>
>
>It's no secret that the Bay of Fundy experiences the highest tides in the
>world. For some in an energy starved world, there is a logical connection
>between high tides and tidal power.
>
>
>
>It's a concept that has been on the project list for Nova Scotia Power
>(NSP)
>for years. Now the energy company has announced it plans a tidal
>demonstration project in the Bay of Fundy. The project is finally coming to
>fruition with the selection of OpenHydro to provide new, in-stream tidal
>technology to a pilot project planned for the Bay of Fundy.
>
>
>
>The project, when completed, will be the largest in-stream tidal generating
>unit integrated into an electricity grid in the world. It represents a
>major
>accomplishment in providing new kinds of renewable energy and further adds
>to the energy potential of Atlantica.
>
>
>
>Emera, Nova Scotia Power's parent company, straddles both sides of the
>Canada - US border in Atlantica. It has interests in Nova Scotia and in
>Maine through Bangor Hydro Electric. OpenHydro is an Irish company with
>considerable tidal power generation experience. The turbine selected is
>environmentally friendly and has the potential to be deployed in
>large-scale
>farms.

>India's rise to economic superpower: Manna for Atlantica
>
>Atlantica has the closest North American ports to this Asian nation that is
>quickly becoming a trade behemoth. India represents a substantial
>opportunity for the transportation corridor as manufactured goods start to
>fly out of Indian factories.
>
>The Globe and Mail published this op/ed written by AIMS Senior Policy
>Analyst Stephen Kymlicka who points out how trade with India suffers from
>misconceptions. Highlighting the amazing strides India has made in terms of
>public and private sector investment, Kymlicka gives the facts on the
>country's potential as a trading partner and stresses the need to get
>moving
>or lose the opportunity.
>
>"India is about agriculture, automobiles, textiles, gems/jewellery,
>chemicals, steel, transportation equipment, cement, mining, petroleum, and
>pharmaceuticals. In fact, Indian industrial growth last quarter came in at
>a
>torrid 14.4% annual rate."

>Halifax Port Authority endorses Gateway, increased trade with India
>
>Port Authority President and CEO Karen Oldfield recently addressed Ontario
>business leaders at the Empire Club in Toronto with the message that
>Halifax
>is the logical choice for goods transitioning through from Asia.
>
>An article from the Chronicle Herald covered Ms. Oldfield's speech which
>echoed Atlantica's views on the tremendous opportunity trade with India
>represents. She highlighted the example of The Canadian Retail Shippers
>Association which uses Halifax as its main port for shipments from India
>because they found they could cut shipping times in half.
>
>A related story from the previous day discussed how increased traffic
>through the Suez Canal is an excellent indicator of potential growth for

>What is Atlantica?
>
>
>
>Atlantica: the International Northeast Economic Region (AINER) is defined
>chiefly by geography, economic trends and trade patterns; common problems
>and experiences; and politics. Much of this wedge of territory has been
>outside the charmed circle of North American prosperity for years.
>
>
>
>The reasons are buried deep in our history. Especially after the Americans
>rejected Reciprocity and Confederation was born, the continent was divided
>into two national projects. Each sought to open up its half of the
>continent
>on an east-west axis. Each had a funnel on the East Coast (Montreal and New
>York respectively) that caught the energies of Europe and channelled them
>toward the conquest of the continent. Atlantica was bypassed.
>
>
>
>But now, continental free trade and globalization could put an end to the
>isolation of Atlantica. The east-west axis for development of North America
>is being supplemented by a drive to stitch back together the old
>north-south
>trade routes that had flourished across the continent before 1867.
