It will also make our societies more - not less - likely to see terrorist attacks. No discussion on military tactics in the House of Commons will change that reality. Indeed, violence is increasing with more attacks on both coalition troops and on Afghan civilians. While individual Canadian soldiers may have gone to Afghanistan with the best of intentions, they are operating under the auspices of a US-led state building project that cares little for the needs of the Afghan people. US and Canadian interests rest with the massive $3.2 billion Trans Afghan Pipeline (TAP) project, which will bring oil from the Caspian region through southern Afghanistan (where Canada is stationed) and onto the ports of Pakistan. It has been no secret that the TAP has dominated US foreign policy towards Afghanistan for the last decade. Now Canadian oil and gas corporations have their own interests in the TAP. Over the last decade, the role of the Canadian Armed Forces abroad has changed and Canadian foreign policy has become a replica of the US empire building rhetoric. The end result of this process is now plain to see with the role of our troops in Southern Afghanistan, with the enormous budget increases for war expenditures and "security", with the Bush-style speeches of Stephen Harper, and with the fear campaigns around "homegrown terrorism" to foster support for those nefarious changes. It is this very course that will get young Canadian soldiers killed, that will endanger our society and consume more and more of its resources for destruction and death in Afghanistan. We demand a freeze in defense and security budgets until an in-depth public discussion is held on those issues across Canada. The mission in Afghanistan has already cost Canadians more than $4 billion. That money could have been used to fund human needs in Canada or abroad. ENGLISH BEGINS HERE ========================= Solidarity Rally with the Palestinian people Saturday, 8 July 2006, at 1 pm corner of Jean-Talon and Parc avenue (metro Parc) On the occasion of the second anniversary of the historical opinion given by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) reiterating that the Israeli occupation regime is illegal and establishing that the Wall built by Israel in Palestine is also illegal and must be demolished, the /Coalition for Justice and Peace in Palestine/ calls a rally of solidarity with the Palestinian people. Two year later, the construction of the Wall and the other illegal actions of Israel continue with total impunity: the military occupation, the expansion of settlements, the denial of the right of return of refugees, the bombardments against the civilian population, the "selective" assassinations, the confiscations of land, the detentions without trial, and torture. Closures and checkpoints cut cities from one another and create multiple delays and harassment for the most ordinary daily activities (going to school, going to work, getting some food and supplies, visiting family or friends, etc.). An entire people, humiliated daily. Recently, the situation got even worse with the refusal of Western powers to recognize the results of democratic parliamentary elections that saw the victory of Hamas, and the cutting off of funding to the Palestinian Authority. The resulting situation is catastrophic for the Palestinian people : its very right to education, its right to work, and even its right to food are being targeted and Canada was the first country to attack in this way the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people by suddenly cutting off its aid! Moreover, this antidemocratic and inhumane policy of strangulation, considerably heightens tensions within the Palestinian population to the point of increasing the risks of civil war... At this very moment, under the pretext that some Palestinian resistance forces are detaining _one_ Israeli soldier -- when Israel arbitrarily and routinely detains _thousands_ of Palestinians, resistance fighters and ordinary civilians -- Israel is engaged in yet another devastating assault on the Gaza Strip, in a new wave of collective punishments (destruction of bridges and of the only electrical distribution station) against the Palestinian people, which are all crimes under international law but which will, again, remain unpunished... On Saturday, 8 July, we will reaffirm: => that Israel must comply with international law; that the Wall must be demolished, and that the occupation and the colonization must cease immediately; => that the impunity and support which the Israeli State benefits from must cease; => that Canada must immediately restore its aid to the Palestinian Authority, and that it must denounce the crimes committed by the State of Israel under international law, and actively support the implementation of the right to self-determination of the Palestinian people. Le vendredi 14 juillet, 250 personnes ont particip?? vers midi ? une manifestation devant le consulat isra??lien dans le centre-ville de Mont??al. Celle-ci a eu lieu l? o?? l'organisme Palestiniens et Juifs Unis (PAJU) tiennent une vigile tous les vendredis depuis cinq ans et le d??but de la deuxi??me Intifada Palestinienne. Au lieu d'une vigile silencieuse, une foule charg??e ??motionellement a mis au clair qu'il ??tait temps d'??tre bruyant et d'exprimer notre indignation face aux crimes de guerre isra??liens. Les orateurs ont mis au clair que l'appui du Canada aux actions isra??liennes est une violation directe de la loi internationale, et que nos politiciens devront en r??pondre. L'invasion sanglante isra??lienne de la bande de Gaza entame une troisi??me semaine, suite ? la capture d'un soldat des forces d'occupation par des combattants de la r??sistance. La lib??ration du soldat est conditionelle ? la lib??ration de plus de 8000 prisonniers politiques palestiniens emprisonn??s en Isra??l. Catherine Monday, 31 July from 8pm til midnight Sunday saw the worst attack on Lebanon in this latest string of Israeli aggression. Qana is now witness to yet another massacre. A residential building was brought down by an Israeli bomb. 65 people lost their lives, 37 of which were children. Qana has seen such events 10 years ago at the hands of the same killers. At 12:30 a.m. on the morning of May 10, 2004, a Special Forces squad of approximately 20 U.S. Marines executed a military assault on the home of 69-year-old Annette Auguste, a.k.a. So Anne.
