DISCUSSION
"Haiti`s history and its social and political realities are systematically misrepresented in the mainstream press as well the majority of politicians and so-called experts. The courageous struggle of the Haitian people for democracy and social justice is similarly presented in a inacurate and often malicious way.
"As a result, the people of Haiti is deprived of the much needed sympathy and solidarity which it deserves. The objectives of this speaking tour is to deploy a people-to-people diplomacy and to cut through the web of lies and half-truths. If Canadians are correctly informed about Haiti, it will be more difficult for the government of Canada to engage in policies that constitute a violation of Haiti's hard won sovereignty and of the will of the Haitian people."

FILM
In "Haiti: Democracy Undone", Walt Bogdanich, a reporter with The New York Times, investigates the 2004 coup and the US role. That coup was led by Louis Jodel Chamblain, a former death squad leader, and Guy Philippe, a former police chief accused of drug trafficking by the US. While the US claimed they opposed any attempt to violently overthrow the Aristide government, Bogdanich finds that elements of the US government were sending the political opposition a very different message. The investigation looks at the role of the International Republican Insitute, based in Washington. In 2004 the IRI, a non-profit organisation, received $36,000,000 in federal funds to promote democracy abroad. There have been earlier allegations of US support for the 2004 coup. This documentary presents new and overwhelming evidence that that was the case.
