QPIRG McGill is excited to present "NO ONE IS ILLEGAL: An Analysis of
Migration, Borders and Global Apartheid" a free public lecture presented by
Jaggi Singh.
This past June 2005, migrants, refugees and their allies marched for over
one-week from Montreal to Ottawa, demanding status for all. This presentation
is in part inspired by the March on Ottawa and aims to provide a critical
analysis of Canada's immigration system within the context of worldwide
migration, displacement and capitalist globalization. Topics covered will
include: contemporary migration; the history of border controls; colonialism,
neo-colonialism and self-determination; security and the "war on terror";
resistance to borders; secret trials and security certificates; the detention
of immigrants; contemporary campaigns for immigrant rights; and more.
Jaggi Singh is a Montreal activist and a member of No One Is Illegal-Montreal
and Solidarity Across Borders.
The lecture is the first in a three part series. The proceeding installments
are geared towards individuals interested in getting involved in local
movements in support of immigrant rights:
