[Blacklabcollective] long knife oct 27

Hey,

I had a long chat with Vanessa, she said those shows were booked long
before she heard of the owner's assault on our friend 5 years ago, and that
at that point she heard about it, she had already had a working
relationship with the owner that had been built over several years (though
after the assault and court case), which obviously complicates things. She
said she would talk to him and see if he is willing to reach out to Lana
and potentially apologize or try to make things right, but obviously that
is outside of her control. While her attitude towards the whole thing
wasn't the greatest in my eyes, i don't know if everyone can have the exact
same attitude towards everyone that acts fucked up as us all the time to be
something that we work with necessarily. She doesn't work for the Cobalt
anymore, either. I get the impression that her wanting to work with us is
part of her moving away from working with people like that as well. And
really, what bar/venue in the DTES doesn't have something sketchy about it.

I also talked to Lana, also at some length. She's very grateful to Nathan
for bringing this back to everyone's attention. Her frustrations lie more
with her friends that perform and attend shows there, rather than relative
strangers that work or have worked there. And although she thinks it's
pretty fucked that he has a successful business, good reputation, no
criminal record, and all of his own teeth, she said she doesn't hold
resentment or draw a hard line towards her friends that do perform or
attend there, because if she did she feels that she'd have to write off a
lot of people. She made clear she would not be bummed if we let Vanessa
help with a show at the BL and had no strong feelings about whether or not
we worked with her. Anyways, we can put off discussing this until the
meeting, but I just thought I would follow up with how those discussions
went.

Oof. Punk politicing, eh? Exhausting. I still think that this show is more
about the touring band than the previous employer of the person lining it
up, but we can discuss it at the meeting on Tuesday. If it feels to
complicated, fuck it.
