[Blacklabcollective] Grants - input please!

I agree about a meeting and don't think we should necessarily shy away from hiring a staff person even if it's not me. A position like that could help a lot of marginalized punx out. I think it's important that we don't deny that our space is operating in a capitalist marketplace even if we don't agree with it.

Hello all,
I think this is a really important topic, and I am glad it has come up. It has a lot to do with the collective vision for the space and for what the Black Lab is 'about.' Personally, I think that grant money would do wonders for keeping the space going for a long time, but in terms of hiring staff and potentially bringing things to code injects a lot of legality--and that is a really political thing, and I think that this would be a worthwhile discussion to have at a meeting. I would love to hear a little more where everyone is coming from on this.
Take care,
Brendan

Some degree of legitimacy is important, though, because it will keep us from getting shut down. And more money will probably really lead to more work rather than less, ha. Anyways, yes, we should talk about all of this more, clearly.

Again I really appreciate and understand the effort in this. I just don't want you to work hard on the letter and then I come in and say "I don't like this or that" hahaha!

Thanks for your direct and honest response Raf. I am happy to do or not do this. For the record it is a lot of work to write them so we definitely need to be sure we want to do it or else let's not do it. And I respect your perspective. If people are ok to do the work to earn money how we do it that's great!!
I think what you're describing is exactly what's happening. These grants will not keep it sketchy, it can't be.
And for other examples, Maybe you are talking about the place in Aalborg denmark for example? And yes that would be the model. And yes it was the least interesting place to play.
I can just do society stuff and leave grants alone. The grant im looking at is a new society grant for operating. We can keep them separate for sure!
The reason grants require staffing is that grantors don't believe that projects are worth it to fund if they will fail or shut down. Their biggest assurance that we won't fail is to have someone paid to make sure it's running fine.

I agree with Lindsay in this one. I think we should talk about this in the next meeting for a bit. If we start paying people the dynamics will change and I don't know if I want that. I think it is important to keep the space volunteered run. I don't want to be anybody's boss and also money sucks. My idea of the space is to have a space away from capitalism and government dynamics and closer to punk, DIY and autonomy. I am also really ignorant in the grant subject, I have more questions than anything. I would like to know what would need to be done by us in order to get the grants. I am not familiar at all with this kinds of processes. Like for example, do we have to be more legit or is just as simple as changing our legal name? Do we have to put a lot of work in order to get them? Stuff like putting exit signs, change or capacity, pay taxes, etc. Sorry for my ignorance, but I want to keep the space as sketchy as possible and closer to the punk community than to the government rules. I have been to many, many spaces like ours in Europe, South and North America and the lamest spaces, the least interesting ones are always the ones that get money from the government. I am just scared that we stop being cool :)
One last thing, thanks Anju for doing all this work!!! I just need to read a bit more about the subject and hear what options do we have :P
Excited!
Rafael.

I really don't like the idea of someone in the collective getting paid while everyone else doesn't because i feel like it puts differing values on our work, and we all work hard. Sorry Eris.

Or if we could hire a maintenance person? That seems like the most needed "staff" cost to be honest. And I don't think any of us would mind getting paid for the time and energy we are putting into the space, either. :)
Otherwise I don't care about taking money from anyone as long as the stipulations are realistic, but I trust your judgement there. For example, SBC just got $24,000 from the city, but it is exclusively for outside of the building and an awning. Don't we still need to get our society status sorted out before we can start accessing that stuff, though?

I was gona suggest Eris as the staff person as well, since she's on part time at OCB right now? makes sense to me. And/or any other collective member that would have an interest in being a staff person, if anyone else has interest in that position. I think it'd be better to hire someone from the collective! since we all work our butts off itd be cool if at least one of us is getting paid! :)
I am ok with any of the above grants, though I think we should avoid taking money from other DTES agencies, so maybe the city/province/canada/bc arts council stuff would be more priority to me as opposed to DTES cultural infrastructure grants.
thanks again anju for your work on this, it's very stoking.

I would totally be willing to be the "staff member" or whatever if it means we get $$$.

Hey all, I haven't managed to add Eris to the list yet so please add her when you email about space stuff for now.
I want to know everyone's stand on grants. Talking to folks, it seems we are not agreed on whether we should apply for grants or not. Since writing grants is a shit load of work, i'll need to know where we stand on what types of grants we want to apply for and what you support me in writing for.
It's not a good use of my time to keep asking back about specific grants, I'm quite busy, so it would be better for me to have direction and to check in on the basics and to go with it and apply. I just want to make sure I'm not applying for something and have it be rejected by the collective after i put work into it.
One of the grants i'm looking at requires that a portion of funds go to staffing. This means hiring a part- or full-time person to run the operating side of things. If we aren't interested in having a staff member, then I need to remove these grants from my list. Operating grants will never be successful if there is no paid staff to run it. In fact, FYI, many grants won't be successful without the grantor knowing that someone is being paid to ensure that the project is completed and successful.
Here are my questions:
-Do we want to hire someone (from our collective or not) to work on stuff at the space?-Do we want to take money from the city?-Do we want to take money from the province?-Do we want to take money from the DTES cultural infrastructure grants?-Do we want to take money from the Canada Council for the Arts and BC Council for the Arts?-Are we ok with asking for money for festivals?-Are we ok with asking for money for workshops?-Are we ok with asking for money for community support (training/resources, especially technology).
Thanks!
