[Blacklabcollective] Rat Cleanup Plan for Sunday/Monday's Show & Pest Control

Hey everyone! Get ready for a long ass email!

I just met with the pest control guy and it looks like we have a fair bit
of work ahead of us if we wana get the rats under control. I didn't get
specific with our use of the space, he just assumed we are "trying to open
a business" and I kept everything vague.

Basically, as we all I'm sure suspected, the back sink hole is the biggest
major entry point that exists. He referred to it as a "superhighway". He
also said all the clutter back there (wood, garbage, etc) is primo rat
nesting material and should be cleared out and filled in.

The actual back door has a corner on it that has a small gap, and this is
another easy entry point. Rats apparently have collapsible ribcages and can
fit through super tiny holes. Great!

There are other visible possible entry points in the back bathroom (the one
that's painted white), I noted to him that there seems to be a lot of feces
and chewed up wood and stuff near the hot water tank and he couldn't see in
there very well but said that he figured there's probably an entry point
back in there. There is another pretty large one in the front corner on the
side near the stage, and numerous other, smaller ones all over. He also
felt that under the stage is a potential nesting zone since it is hollow
and suggested we get rid of it if we don't have a use for it (haha...).

Basically the steps he suggested were as follows:
1) Massively de-clutter! Any cluttered, cozy corners are rat havens and the
less they can hide from humans, the less likely they are to want to hang
out in the lab.
2) Clean up and deal with the sink hole in the back of the property (I
personally feel this is well beyond our abilities).
3) Set out bait traps and snap traps. The bait traps I guess are blocks of
poisonous stuff that the rats bring back to share with their families. Grim
as fuck.
4) Locate all entry points and fill them with steel wool and pre-mixed
concrete (this is a combo that they can't chew through).

He really seemed to think that the sheer amount of STUFF in the space is a
huge factor in how much rat activity we have. Every area of the space we
went into, he would just point at all our piles of junk and say "all that
has to go"... basically we need to get rid of anything non-essential/useful
before we can really get a handle on the situation. And yea, the sinkhole.
Hopefully while the landlord is in town we can talk him into actually
hiring someone to deal with that back area... it needs to be dealt with by
someone who knows how to fix it in a way where it doesn't further
exacerbate the sinking of the building.

Ok! hope everyone is having a great week. see y'all soon.
-megan.
