I can also lend a hand to helping us stay open for the meeting. We could also easily add a lock to the fridge?

This is a huge time commitment. I think that's my biggest concern. Are they offering us anything? For what theyre asking, we would pretty much need to have a collective member there for 6 hours every week on Saturdays, which also affects our own ability to ever use the space during that time (for example, noise fest, flea mafkets, or any other day time workshops that might be best scheduled for saturdays). We have a lot of expensive sound equipment and often alcohol that isn't locked away in there, which is a theft risk, if strangers have access to the entire space without a responsible person present. I think this is actually a pretty huge thing to commit to, and something that needs to be thought out and discussed. Do we know why/how they lost their other space? Sorry if I'm being a party pooper, I think this is a cool thing and people to work with but we need to make sure its a good deal for us as well.

Megan can probably better to speak to this, but since I am sitting in front of my computer I will go ahead and answer. To the best of my knowledge, this will be ongoing for the foreseeable future. Essentially then, Megan and I are saying that we will be present to unlock/lock the space before and after their meetings and perhaps to ensure that chairs/tables are accessible. I think we are still figuring out how best to do that given our current schedules, but I think we can make it work!

Is it just 5he one Saturday or ongoing into the foreseeable future is my question? Because if it is every Saturday, being present for 6 hours every week is a huge commitment. But it does sound great to me too if y'all are into it!

Hey everyone,
I know my response isn't exactly 'time sensitive,' but I wanted to say that I am hugely in support of this idea. This is a great opportunity to provide value in the community and to make inroads with more folks who are active in the neighborhood. I think the main wrinkles right now are Noisefest and scheduling around unlocking/locking the space after the meetings. Megan and I tentatively agreed to take charge of that, but we will have to be in communication with Wendy to make sure it works smoothly. With Noisefest, I think we just have to make sure that Wendy is aware of this situation, and arrangements are made to meet earlier, etc.
I am confident we can sort those things out, and I am stoked that everyone is supportive of this!

As long as someone is around to facilitate that sounds pretty great to me. Did she say how long for? Or just every Saturday into the foreseeable future?

Hey all! I was just contacted by Wendy Pedersen via facebook. For those of you who maybe don't know her, she's a long-standing community organizer in the DTES who is highly involved in a ton of stuff around the hood.
Apparently one of the groups she works with has had an issue with their meeting space and she asked me if it'd be possible to use the Black Lab on Saturday afternoons starting in April for meetings.... here is what she said specifically:
"Hi
Megan, I heard through the grapevine that you may have a connection to
the space on east hastings near the empress - it looks like an art
space? I'm looking for a space to use for community organizing on
Saturday afternoons.we just got booted out of the space that we thought we had lined up for saturday april 18 and now desperate! We would need it from 11am until about 5 pm but we
could shrink that if you need us to. Super cool program 12-1:30
strategizing with sro tenants about how to charge their landlords for
Maintnenace violations and 2-4 short video and circle time with a
community elder."
I think this would be a ridiculously easy way to open the space up for a rad community project that would have hardly any impact on us, we'd basically just need to let folks in and maybe help set up the chairs or something. Brendan has already said he's down to help out with this and so am I. I guess the only concern may be that I don't know what time noise fest starts at on the 18th/what time folks are gona be setting up but it sounds like she's quite flexible with the times so that should be easy to work out, i think? Is everyone down? she's hoping to have an answer by tomorrow afternoon so that she can put the word out so if anyone has any concerns, please let them be known ASAP. it seems like it'd be a cool way to connect to folks doing rad shit in the DTES to me ... thoughts? questions/concerns? if everyone is cool with it (which frankly i hope folks are :) ) --- anju, what time are ppl setting up for noise fest at on the 18th?
thanks yall
megan
