[Bhpbilliton] Deaths at Cerrejon mine, Colombia in August

"The fact is disastrous" said Cerrejón on the crash that left 4 dead and 12 
injured.

Julian Gonzalez classified like this the accident that occurred on Wednesday 
night at the moment when a group of 16 workers were performing repair and 
maintenance work in one of two coal storage silos in crushing plants at 
Cerrejónmine located in the municipality of Albania (La Guajira).

Gonzalez said the company has started an investigation involving officials of 
the three owners of the multinational companies, BHP Billiton, Anglo American 
and Xstrata Coal, from South Africa, Australia, and Switzerland.

The workers were on a platform, which apparently came off of its structure, 
falling from about 30 meters high, which killed four of them and left the rest 
with injuries. The dead workers were identified as Luis Alfredo Restrepo, 
Antioquia department, Carlos Enrique Perez Zabaleta, 31, of Santa Rosa 
(Bolivar), Luis Manuel Ricardo Borja, 26, a native of San Marcos (Sucre), and 
Jairo del Cristo Garcia Jaramillo, 27, born in Villa Fatima (Córdoba).

Three of the wounded, Conrad Echeverri, Andrés Cárdenas and Luis Gonzalez were 
taken by the company in ambulance aircraft to Barranquilla, due to the severity 
of their injuries. In the Hospital San José de Maicao,IvánAreiza and Hugo 
Díazremained under observation.

The other injured were discharged with recommendations and follow-up care in 
their homes. Of workers involved in the tragedy, 11 of them belong to the 
contracting firm 'Ticomo' and 5 to 'Conconcreto'.

The group were carrying out structural reinforcement work of the walls inside of 
the silo, measuring 70 meters in height . The company categorized this as one of 
the most tragic events in its 25 years of mining operations. While expressing 
his condolences and sympathy to the families of workers, 

he also said that the company had begun an extensive investigation that involved 
officials from the three owners of the multinational companies, comprised of BHP 
Billiton, Anglo American and Xstrata oal, from South Africa, Australia, and 
Switzerland.
