Hi all....
just had a chat to Nat, and seems the free conference is not going to work with the calling card business, so we thought lets try Skype again give it a few minuets and go to a skype chat if the skype call doesn't work...
here are some clear outcome for us to get out of this conference....
1. how long do we want each case study (suggestion 2 pages each as in the Barrick alt annual report)
2. Time line: When does Sakura need the draft's in for editting- (2 weeks?)
How long for editting
How long for layout
3. What format should the case studies be in? ( eg. small box with info on ownership of mine, resource mined, location, then cover issues of individual mine-eg, water, Indigenous issues/ opposition, waste, labor etc)
4. What other resources, visual aids, testimonies, quotes do we need to find
5. Who is looking after which case studies (eg. Whit and Richard- Cerrojon Colombia, help with Philippines, Peru and Guatemala.)
6. Suggestion for printing.... funding??? printers - Arena in Melbourne, and a printer in London...

Thanks Richard. Think that sums up well the points, except on point 1
just to stress that part of our reason for re-appraising having not got
confirmation of funds yet is that our time may be better spent
assisting on the alternative report (which wasn't around when we first
set down our plans for meeting in London and also provides us with
opportunities for use with press in London if it is ready in time)
& in better coordination with Australian groups for both AGMs. I
also think (hope) it will put us in a better position to work together
on any plans for a bigger push at next year's AGMs (building on the
solidarity work here).
Also on point three, I had promised to follow up with various groups on
certain issues (& within Mines and Commmunities list). Sorry I
haven't done that (since I talked with Mia I've been at planning
meetings & just back off vacation, so catching up) - if I can keep
off the email/meeting treadmill for just a few hours I should be able
to catch up. Of course having info (deadlines etc.) Richard mentions
below will really help in making initial contact.
Sorry not to be able to join you - might have pushed to stay up until
3a but have morning meetings (actually think that is just a convenient
excuse, as I didn't want to proffer the pathetic inability to function
excuse as well).

Dear all,
Andy Whitmore and I spoke this afternoon (Tuesday 8 September) in
London about work on the BHP Billiton AGMs and alternative report. Whit
will be emailing you all later with anything that I fail to mention now.
The key things from our point of view are:
1) We are not going to be in a position to host a big gathering of
communities affected by BHP Billiton here in London as we had hoped, as
we have not got the funds we need to do so. (We hope to do this next
year instead.) Two London Mining Network member groups, PIPLinks (which
Whit works for) and Colombia Solidarity Campaign (in which I am heavily
involved) hope to host guests at the time of the London AGM on 29
October. We plan a meeting for NGOs, or maybe a public meeting, on
Tuesday 27 October, and meetings with Government offices and (if the
community representatives request such meetiungs, which one of the
Colombians has) with the company, as well as trying to get some press
interest.
2) We hope that any alternative report could be ready for the London
AGM and not only for the Australian AGM. This gives us tight deadlines.
What are those deadlines? Sakura, is there a definite plan for the
length and layout of the report?
3) We are happy to provide content on the Cerrejon mine in Colombia,
help with Philippine content and help find content on Guatemala and
Peru if necessary. It would be good to know exactly what we need to
provide, in what form and by what date.
I think those are the main points. Whit may add more later. I hope the
conference call goes well and regret my pathetic inability to function
well at 3am!
All the best,
Richard.

Hi all,
It is shame that skype voice failed us in our BHP alt annual report
meeting but the chat worked
surprisingly well. Below are some of the themes and ideas that came out
of the meeting.
Next meeting
I will set up a freeconference.com call for Wednesday 9 September, 12pm
Melbourne/Sydney, 10am Manila // Tuesday 8 September, 10pm Ottawa/Philly
Unfortunately this is really late for London (Wednesday 9 September
3am). Are people in London able to have their own meeting and send us
notes / contributions?
Can you please let me know if you are available for the freeconference.com
call or if there is anyone that I should add to the meeting so
I
can
book it. So far I have confirmation of: Sakura, Tanya, Mia, Rod, Nat
...Who else should be on this list?
Rod, did you want to invite Jean Marie? I will need her
email
address so I can invite her onto the BHPB elist.
I am sending this email out on the BHPB list we have set p so we can
start using that, sorry for the cross posting.
Cheers Nat
