UNION MEMBERS WIN RETRAINING SCHOLARSHIPS
The Columbia Institute, an organization dedicated to re-training and skills
development in British Columbia, recently announced that ten out of 16 of
their $1000 awards went to BC union members. Union leaders are calling on
the BC Liberals to pay attention and invest directly in BC's working people.

LIBERALS PLAN TO SHIP PRIVATE SECTOR JOBS OUT OF BC
The softwood lumber dispute continues to devastate BC's rural communities.
Now, the BC Liberals seem intent on destroying good private sector jobs in
Vancouver and Victoria shipyards by putting construction and maintenance
work out for international tender.

HEALTH AUTHORITY ANNOUNCES CLOSURE OF ST. MARY'S HOSPITAL
Officials at the Fraser Health Authority announced July 10 that they'll be
closing down St. Mary's Hospital, despite one of the best patient
satisfaction records around.

VICTORY! SENIORS FIGHTBACK CAMPAIGN GETS RESULTS
The government has directed health authorities to stop the closure of
long-term care facilities. A health authority representative calls it a
'pause', but seniors groups couldn't be happier about the announcement.

CEP REQUESTS PICKET SUPPORT
CEP Local 2000 members employed by Pacific Newspaper Group have been locked
out since July 2. Picket support has been requested.

MORE JOBS AT RISK AS SOFTWOOD LUMBER DISPUTE DRAGS ON
Over 4,000 IWA members remain unemployed on the BC Coast and mills are
announcing scheduled down time in late summer and early fall.

BC FACES MORE UNCERTAINTY AFTER TREATY REFERENDUM
As poor as the turn-out was for the BC Treaty Referendum, the Liberals
billed the process as an overwhelming success. If the goal was to throw the
treaty process into chaos and uncertainty, then the Liberals were
successful.
