SCHOOL
B.C. Federation of Labour President Jim Sinclair joined
the fight to save the Wells community school August 12th.
The elementary school was ordered closed July 5th to deal
with a budget shortfall caused by Liberal under-funding.

GLOBAL TRANSPORTATION UNIONS BRAKE FOR GLOBAL SOLIDARITY

Vancouver August 14-21, 2002 to attend the 40th Congress
of the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF)

KELOWNA TELUS WORKERS RALLY TO PREVENT JOB LOSSES
Telecommunications workers and union leaders rallied at
Kelowna's Waterfront park August 10th to protest 400
layoffs announced by Telus as part of a major corporate
restructuring strategy in BC and Alberta.

SODEXHO TRIES TO HIRE STRIKEBREAKERS IN SCOTLAND
The Hospital Employees' Union learned August 9th that
Sodexho, one of the companies bidding on lucrative BC
health care cleaning contracts, bussed in strikebreakers
from Wales and England to break union picket lines at
Glasgow's Royal Infirmary in Scotland.

OPEIU TO APPEAL FOR PUBLIC HEARINGS INTO HYDRO DEAL
The Office and Professional Employees International
Union, Local 378 (OPEIU 378) filed an appeal July 31st
with the BC Court of Appeal to review two controversial
decisions by the BC Utilities Commission. The
Commission denied the union's requests to hold public
hearings on Hydro's controversial plan to privatize and
break up the company.

KING EDWARD STUDENTS BEAT RETROACTIVE TUITION HIKES
Fifty students attending Vancouver Community College in
the Diesel Education Program this term were relieved to
learn they won't be billed 40 percent more for courses
they're already taking.
