On January 24, 2020 millions of people filled the streets of Baghdad, Iraq united in the demand: “U.S. Troops Out Now!” These mass demonstrations were ignited by the brazen U.S. assassination of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani in Iraq at the beginning of January, but this criminal action by the United States in Iraq does not stand alone. Well over 1 million Iraqi people have been killed by the U.S.-led war and occupation since their criminal invasion in March 2003. Iraqi people have suffered 17 years of U.S.-led war and occupation that has destroyed their infrastructure, healthcare and education systems, and have left them with high rates of unemployment and poverty.

Meanwhile in Iran, Trump’s campaign of “maximum pressure” is economically strangling the country and the Iranian people. Most notably, Iranian cancer patients, along with those needing treatment for other conditions, are in a life or death situation as U.S. sanctions prevent Iran’s ability to import critical medicines and equipment.

In the face of U.S.-led war, occupations and sanctions, people from Iraq and Iran to Venezuela and Palestine continue to stand up for their sovereignty and self-determination. As working, poor and oppressed people in the U.S., Canada and around the world, it is our responsibility to stand with them and to unite to oppose this imperialist criminal war-drive, which since 2001 has brought nothing but death, killing and destruction to the people of the Middle East, North Africa, and Latin America.

These events will take place on the traditional and unceded territories of the Tsleil-Waututh (səl̓ilwətaɁɬ), the Musqueam (xʷməθkʷəy̓əm), and the Squamish (Skwxwú7mesh) Coast Salish Nations.
