On Wednesday, November 8, the United Nations declared that today Yemen is on the brink of “the largest famine the world has seen for many decades, with millions of victims.” The people of Yemen are facing this unthinkable crisis due to continuous bombing and a criminal siege leveled against them by Saudi-Arabia, with full backing and support by the United States.

The indiscriminate bombing and inhuman naval, air and land blockade of Yemen began 2.5 years ago. Since then, more than 10,000 people have been killed. Basic infrastructures such as hospitals, schools, homes, sanitary systems, and roads, as well as important historical and cultural sites, have been completely destroyed. By the end of October, 2017 nearly 900,000 people had contracted cholera. According to the United Nations, more than 21million people are in immediate need of humanitarian assistance.

This brutal campaign by Saudi Arabia and their allies would not be possible without support, financial backing, and weapons, provided to them by the United States, the UK and their allies. This includes Canada, which has a $15 billion arms deal with Saudi Arabia.

The humanitarian crisis for the people of Yemen is worsening daily. As peace loving people around the world we must unite our voices to oppose the brutality of this Saudi-led bombing campaign against Yemen. U.S./Saudi Arabia Hands Off Yemen! Lift the Inhuman Blockade On Yemen!

This events will take place on the traditional and unceded territories of the Tsleil-Waututh (səl̓ilwətaɁɬ), the Musqueam (xʷməθkʷəy̓əm), and the Squamish (Skwxwú7mesh) Coast Salish Nations.

As we come together for a night of poetry and culture dedicated to the people of Yemen, we will also be marking 14 years of antiwar, anti-occupation organizing by Mobilization Against War and Occupation (MAWO). MAWO formed on October 29, 2003 to organize against the US/UK occupation of Iraq. Since then, MAWO has been a constant antiwar voice in Canada and internationally demanding an end to all imperialist wars and occupations as well as self-determination for all oppressed nations.
