On January 29, 2017 six Muslim men were killed in a terrorist attack on the Centre Culturel Islamique de Québec in Quebec City, Canada. This atrocious act was carried out by a young man whose hatred and fear of Muslims had driven him to extreme violence. However, looking around the world today it is clear that this horrible action is not an isolated event.  

Around the world, Islamophobia is rampant and on the rise. Over the last 16 years of the new era of war and occupation that began with the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, rising Islamophobia has come hand-in-hand with escalating U.S.-led wars and occupations in the Middle East and North Africa. 

This can be seen in the increasing discrimination against Muslims, attacks on mosques and Islamic institutions as well as harassment and physical attacks against Muslims in the U.S., Canada and Europe. It has also been made clear with the Trump administration’s attempt to impose an inhuman travel and refugee ban on seven Muslim countries: Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen – all targets of US military attacks or sanctions.

Join Mobilization Against War and Occupation (MAWO) on Friday, February 10 to discuss the root causes of Islamophobia and how we must come together and organize to defeat it!
