“War is killing
every beautiful thing inside us and inside our country. It is
heartbreaking to lose that feeling of safety, to be in constant
worry about your loved ones, to live endless terror unable to even
have the slightest mean of life. Life has become a bleak vision for
us, something we fantasize about. And that is how it’s like to be
in a war. The air vanishes and we can listen to our hearts beating
heavily as the bombardment begins, and we wonder whether it’s our
turn coming up to join the victims under the ruins.” - Layla M.
Asda, 26 year old Yemeni masters student at the University of Sana'a
With these few
sentences a young Yemeni woman expresses what the Saudi-led war on
Yemen feels like. For four months Saudi Arabia, with the backing of
the U.S., has carried out a brutal, devastating and ongoing bombing
campaign against the people of Yemen. Over 3,640 innocent Yemeni
people have been killed and 17,302 injured in the war, according to
the World Health Organization.
The people of Yemen
are facing a humanitarian crisis. Alongside continuous bombing,
Saudi Arabia, with the help of the U.S., has imposed an air, land
and sea blockade on Yemen. The blockade has left Yemenis to suffer
from severe shortages of food, water, fuel and medicines, with
nearly 13 million Yemenis facing a food security crisis and 9.4
million with little or no access to water.
After so much war
and destruction, the words of Layla are still strong in echoing the
demands of the Yemeni people for an end to the war. “Peace is what
we need. Our voices need to reach out. Yemenis want to see their
country flourish with development, not with war. War indeed has
changed Yemenis, but it taught them how to survive and to never give
up their dreams.”
With these words,
MAWO calls on peace-loving people in Vancouver to stand with the
people of Yemen and join us out on the streets to demand U.S./Saudi
Arabia Hands Off Yemen!
MAWO encourages
all peace-loving people to join in also demanding:
