For almost four
years the US government has been fomenting a civil war in Syria, with
the aim of overthrowing the Syrian government and of bringing yet
another independent country under the dominance of US imperialism.
The US has pumped Syria full of mercenary troops to fight against the
Syrian government with arms, training and funding through its
regional allies like Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan and Turkey. Not only
has this created chaos in Syria, but the US arming and funding of
mercenaries included ISIS and gave rise to the group in Syria and now
Iraq.

With the new excuse
of the growing enemy of ISIS, which the US themselves helped create,
they are now trying to justify
a new war and a large scale military escalation in Syria. On
Thursday, February 19th news broke that the US government
has a new plan to train so-called Syrian rebels in Turkey and Jordan,
with at least 5000 fighters trained a year for the next three years.
While the US government claims that these fighters are for combating
ISIS, it is clear that this is the part of the escalating US war
drive against Syria.

While calling for an
end to imperialist war and occupation abroad, the protest will
also be demanding
an end to the growing campaign of Islamophobia that
is being pushed and promoted, especially by imperialist governments
in North America and Europe. The most recent consequence
of this is the tragedy
of the three young Muslim students who were shot to death in Chapel
Hill, North Carolina on February 10th.
 This
has sparked protests and vigils around the world, including locally
in Surrey and Vancouver.

While Islamophobia
is a part of justifying and promoting imperialist wars abroad, it is
also used as an excuse to roll back civil liberties and silence the
dissent of all poor and working people at home. Under the guise of
“fighting terrorism”, the Canadian government is now pushing
forward Bill C-51 which, if passed, would grant hugely increased
powers to government institutions to spy on and imprison people for
the purposely vague and undefined crimes of “advocating” and
“promoting” terrorism.

Peace and freedom
loving people around the world must unite to expose and oppose this
new era of war and occupation both at home and abroad!
