((( 1 ))) MAWO “HIP HOP 4 PEACE” AT BURRARD INLET FISH FESTIVAL!

MAWO will be joining the Burrard Inlet Fish Festival with a “Hip Hop 4 Peace” section of the program, featuring local antiwar hip hop artists and messages of peace through rhythms and rhymes. Come visit the MAWO table during the day and check out “Hip Hop 4 Peace” on stage after 4pm!

The Burrard Inlet Fish Festival is a community engaged art event inspired by the theme ‘Nature is our Medicine’. New for this years event is a green, solar, wind and bicycle powered performance stage.

Iraq has already seen what 11 years of a U.S.-led war and occupation means - the horrific 2003 bombing invasion of Baghdad, at least 1.8 million Iraqi people killed, the destruction of infrastructure, infamous night raids and detainee torture. It is a wonder that the U.S. government can go to war in Iraq again with the excuse of helping Iraq, especially when the force they are claiming to be fighting, ISIS, is the same group they have been funding and arming in Syria over the past three years. Canada has also joined the war on Iraq with at least 69 special operations troops, two aircraft carriers and at least $15 million in “security assistance”. Now, the new war on Iraq, with U.S. and France launching hundreds of airstrikes, has also expanded to Syria, which has been the target of U.S. bombing.

Join this forum to discuss what is at stake in Iraq and Syria and how the antiwar movement should respond.

Mobilization Against War & Occupation (MAWO) will be taking this opportunity to reflect on 11 years of antiwar events and actions. MAWO’s efforts to be part of building an effective and united antiwar movement have taken our organizing from local communities to international events throughout the last 11 years, always seeking creative ways to build and advance the fight against the new era of war of occupation that is being waged both at home and abroad. 

MAWO’een is an evening of rhythms and rhymes, featuring performances from local talent and many long time favorites! This will be an evening of looking back while moving forward, and of course a chance for you to get out your MAWO’een costume and enjoy some treats!

SELF-DETERMINATION - NOT MORE TROOPS AND OCCUPATION!

Since the beginning of June, 2014, the open wounds of Iraq caused by sanctions, wars and occupations have grown deeper. This is when the Islamic State in Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS, also known as ISIL) began an onslaught against Iraq, establishing control of important border crossings, cities and territory in Iraq through terrorist actions directed against Iraqi civilians. As of June 29, ISIS had taken control of Iraq's second largest city, Mosul, and declared a “Caliphate” state in the areas under their control in Northern Iraq in opposition to the Iraqi state. Fighting between ISIS and the Iraqi military forces continues, imposing more violence and destruction on the people of Iraq who are already facing the daily reality of a country devastated by over 11 years of U.S.-led war and occupation.
