On the 13th of May, 2014, Turkey faced the biggest coal mine explosion
in the country’s history. It is reported that there are more than a
thousand mine workers trapped inside the privately owned mine and death
toll rises every single second. According to the latest information
received, more than 245 mine workers have died. More than 80 injured
mine workers and rescue team members are at the hospital. It is
suspected that hundreds are still underground.

Instead of sharing the facts with the public, the Turkish government is
seeking to blackout information and downplay the number of deaths.
Afraid of popular reaction, the PM Erdoğan stated that “such accidents
are usual”, and that the issue should not be "politicized". This is to
cover up for the fact that since the Mining Law of 2005, which paved the
way for the privatization and subcontracting of the Turkish mining
industry, mining accidents have significantly increased in the country.
Moreover, it was revealed that about a year ago, a parliamentary motion
was presented by the main opposition party about the frequent mining
accidents and occupational security in Soma. This motion, which was a
chance to avoid the tragedy, was duly rejected by the government last
month.

As Gezi Platform Vancouver, we are inviting you/your organization to
support and express solidarity with the Coal Miners who lost their
lives, as well their families, in the latest workplace carnage in Soma,
Turkey, by joining us in front of Vancouver Art Gallery on 17th of May,
Saturday between 4pm-6pm at Robson Side. We are inviting you to say no
to neoliberal policies all over the world that prioritize profits over
workplace security and human life.
