101st Monthly Picket Action to “Free ALL the Cuban 5 Now!”

On February 27, 2014, Cuban 5 Hero Fernando  González was released from U.S. prison  after serving an unjust sentence of over 15 years. On February 28, 2014 he returned to Cuba to his family and his people.  This  followed the return of Cuban 5 Hero René González in May of last  year. Fernando's return is  another  important step forward in the campaign  to Free the Cuban 5 Heroes. Now is  the time to increase  our efforts until  Gerardo, Antonio  and  Ramon  are also  free and at home in Cuba with their loved ones!

Following the successful March 5th, 100th monthly protest in Vancouver,  which included 16 coordinated events  across Canada, the U.S., Mexico, and Switzerland , the Free the Cuban 5 Committee-Vancouver would like to encourage everyone to get involved to help  keep momentum  growing to, “FREE ALL 5 CUBAN HEROES NOW!”

WHO ARE THE 5 CUBAN HEROES?

Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González and René González, also known as the Cuban 5, are five men who were wrongly accused and convicted in a U.S. Federal Court of “conspiracy to commit espionage” and other fabricated charges, following their arrest and imprisonment in 1998. The 5 were actually unarmed men involved in monitoring Miami-based terrorist organizations, which since 1959 have been responsible for the deaths of over 3,400 people in Cuba, including one resident of Canada, Fabio di Celmo, in 1997. Through their important work, these 5 men were able to prevent further deaths in Cuba. As of March, 2014 René González and Fernando González have both returned permanently to Cuba in a great victory for justice-loving people all over the world. Gerardo, Ramón, and Antonio remain unjustly in U.S. jails facing sentences up to double-life plus 15 years.
