In the
evening of Monday, April 14, a group of right-wing thugs in Venezuela violently
attacked Merli Vanegas, the Consul General of the Bolivarian Republic of
Venezuela in Vancouver and her brother Leonel Zavala in the presence of her
12-year-old niece. The assault, committed against the Consul General and her
family as they were travelling through the opposition-controlled Chacao
municipality of Caracas, sent Leonel to the hospital with a punctured lung
where he is now recovering. 
 
Fire
This Time Movement for Social Justice (FTT) in Vancouver, Canada condemns this
vicious attack and calls on people in Vancouver to join us in continuing to
defend the Bolivarian Revolution in Venezuela. Fire This Time also condemns
imperialist media coverage of the recent violence and soft-coup in Venezuela by
the right-wing opposition and their Western supporters and calls for an end to
the media lies and manipulations. 
 
The
right-wing thugs responsible for this latest assault are part of violent mobs
that have been actively attempting to create destabilization and chaos in
Venezuela since the beginning of February. With political and financial backing
and training from foreign imperialist governments led by the United States and with
the support of Canada, the EU and the UK, these groups are directly or indirectly
responsible for the deaths of 37 people, and over 600 wounded. This right-wing
violence is an effort to reverse the tremendous gains of the revolutionary
process in Venezuela, led by the late Comandante Hugo Chavez and the current
President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro. 
 
Fire This
Time sends our wishes for speedy recovery to brother Leonel and
enthusiastically awaits the return of the Consul General, Merli Vanegas to
Vancouver. 
 
During
this time of increased right-wing opposition violence, it is more important
than ever to unite around the world in defense of the heroic people of
Venezuela and their Bolivarian revolutionary process. The working class
movement and oppressed people around the world will continue to defend the
Venezuelan revolution!
